Thank you Tom P for the correct answers. Skip and Mary Etchells won the Star Worlds Championship in 1951, Mary the only woman ever to do so. Mary retired from crewing 10 years later, to be replaced by sleddog. The two Skips finished 3rd out of 72 boats in the 1962 Star Worlds in Cascais...

Thank you Ants! I'm sorry, but neither answer is correct. I know there are reticent SSS members out there that know the answers. Time to speak up before I unpost. Hint: the two Star Class World's Champs in the photo were related.

Dear Jackie, Macapuno is not a sea story or a way to sail faster to Hawaii. Macapuno is Marianne's coconut ice cream, a prize for those who correctly answer the quizzes I've posted. After cancer I've lowered my sugar intake and Macapuno is no longer available at CBC. But other worthy prizes...

If considering a race to Hawaii, or Pacific passage, I can likely benefit your Transpac fun, speed, and safety by sharing experience gleaned from 31 passages to Hawaii. 4 solo, 4 DH, 23 Full Crew. 14 podiums, 6 overall wins, 5 elapsed time records, 6 First-to-Finish...Contact sleddog at...

Wanted Cal 40 spinnaker pole or tube section

My belief is a #3 on a pole with a #2 to leeward would be dogmeat slow. Any wung-out sails, to be efficient, need to be 1.5 oz nylon or equivalent. Heavier sails, like a #2 or #3, will collapse backward in lulls due to the aft slant of the headstay. That negates any forward pull. The...

Wanted Cal 40 spinnaker pole or tube section

Would politely suggest your spare pole be longer than "J" of 15.17' by 1.5 -2' This allows the backup pole to be used effectively as a whisker pole for a #2 or #1 jib. If you need the backup pole to replace a broken spinnaker pole, it can be shortened to "J" length in 10 min. with a hacksaw...

I should also mention that yesterday, Feb. 26th , was also Commodore's 93rd birthday. Happy Birthday, Good Sir!

Congrats to Commodore, Eric, and ? on completing their winter passage this morning from SF Bay to Honolulu onboard 39' FLASHGIRL in the time of 18 days. To avoid Pacific low pressure systems, they conservatively sailed a course deep south to latitude 19 degrees, 36 minutes N, same latitude as...

A knee replacement is quite similar to prepping and setting off on an ocean passage. Preparation includes rigging CBC for safety, arranging a support crew, planning and buying meals, exercise to be in good shape for the days ahead, planning navigation without being able to drive, keeping a...

    New Boat 4 Sled

Ironic after hundreds of thousands of miles at sea, including Rounding Cape Horn 89 years ago, Commodore Tompkins aboard his Wylie39 FLASHGIRL was boarded yesterday afternoon sailing outbound in Raccoon Straits, at the beginning of his final voyage westward across the Pacific. Although...

IYC pier is level, and back on its pilings! Still work to do, as the pier ultimately needs to be affixed securely to the pilings so it won't float off so readily. Photo by Milly.

After a final night fighting light winds off the Brittany coast, Charlie Dalin, the French skipper of MACIF Santé Prévoyance crossed the Vendée Globe finish line first this Tuesday morning at 07:24 UTC to sail to victory in the Vendee globe, the most prestigious solo sailing race in the world...
