Thank you. I hope we get some interest from SSS. The race is a little like the Fiasco. The SSS sailors might take to it.

Fair enough. That's what Bobbi Tosse said about the Berkeley Midwins years ago.

Thanks. I'll post it on the SSS forum.

HI Jacqueline,

I just added SH monohull to the sign up list. If you bring five we will give you your own division. If you bring fewer we will throw you all in with the rest of the mono fleet when we do fleet assignments. Sound OK?

I wasn't intending to exclude single handers, I just didn't think of the race as a SH endeavor. But I probably should have, as I am a single hander too on my trimaran.

Cheers, Evan

No one ever imagines a race to include singlehanders, but that is (ahem) short sighted of them.

Remember that no one imagined a race around the Farallones until singlehanders created one in 1977.

If we get five singlehanded boats can we have a fleet?

Hi Jacqueline,

Evan McDonald here. I didn't really imagine the race as a single hand endeavor, but I suppose you could do it. For 2025 I think that the registrations will be modest enough such that we won't have a SH division. But as the race grows, and I hope it will, we can definitely go there. I think the race will be best with a couple of people....there is logging to do as well as sailing. And you probably want somebody to eat donuts with in the morning at anchor.

At this time I think I will keep the starting locations to four options. After this year's race I will be reaching out to all the sailors for feedback, and at that time I want to hear about how the start locations that I've picked turn out. It's 3.0 miles to the back of angel from the Richmond harbor entrance, and 3.25 to Paradise. I tried to pick some options where there might be good access to wind in the various conditions we see. North location, South, and two with access to the central bay.

I am glad you are interested in the format. Please give it a try and let me know if you do if you are willing to give me post race feedback.

Evan

Subject: New Race

I love this new race. Two questions: Can we get a singlehanded division? Can we get a start nearer to Richmond?

I've already posted it on the SSS forum. Thanks for the great idea!

Hi Jackie,
We definitely encourage short handed sailors to take up the challenge. I don’t want to speak for Evan, but I expect we will accommodate a division for SH/DH sailors if we get enough boats that it makes sense. Please go ahead and register and note if you are single or doublehanded in the form. Thanks for extending the notice to the SSS board folks.
Cheers,
JP

New Race on the Bay! From the Berkeley Yacht Club. Of course. Will there be a singlehanded division? First question I will ask. Will there be a start closer to Richmond? Another question I will ask.

I love this concept - it's like a predicted log race for sailboats.

Singlehanders would be at a disadvantage to boats which also had a navigator. If I'm solo I'll have to guess the best course and then sail it, regardless of changing wind conditions during the day. Those who could select each leg as they went and keep track of it all will do well.

On a normal Summer day there should be an advantage to starting on the Cityfront, especially at 0900. I wouldn't want to start closer to Richmond, or in the wind shadow of Angel Island or Marin. Stay in the big breeze and off the wind for as many legs as possible.

I've registered singlehanded, hoping there will be enough of us to have our own division. If not, I'd be happy for an experienced SF sailor to join me as navigator.
