    New Boat 4 Sled

I can't say this was an influence, because I only heard of it about 15 years ago. But another half-tonner that floats my boat, also built in Ireland I think, is the Achilles 9 meter. The designer Chris Butler did an OSTAR in it. Nice cosy cockpit, not too beamy, nice looking ... but I've never...

    Fiberglass rowing dinghy

Probably a long shot in this crowd, but can anyone use a hard dinghy? It came with my boat and has been living under my rear patio for the past 14 years. Probably about 8 feet long. Good and stout, fairly heavy; I know I had a heck of a time loading it onto the roof rack of my car by myself. The...

    New Boat 4 Sled

Check out the "Magic Roundabout" in Swindon, England. It has a central circle with five mini-roundabouts arrayed around it. Incidentally, studies have shown that rotaries/roundabouts move traffic more efficiently than signalized intersections. There are several of them around southern New England.

July 1, 1930 hours, Oakland YC. As it says in the NOR, attendance is mandatory. If that's a problem for you, we need to talk. Max

Important! Start/Finish at Golden Gate YC

I've just posted a revised Notice of Race. We are moving the start and finish of the LongPac from the Corinthian to the Golden Gate YC. This is back where we always used to run it before that pesky race with the funny big catamarans got in the way in 2013. Max

    LongPac seminars

The LongPac race committee is pleased to announce the following calendar of seminars and get-togethers in preparation for the LongPac. Entrants, potential entrants and the merely curious are all welcome. Saturday, May 16, Richmond YC. Emergency steering clinic and sail-in. Advice from experts...

    Revised LongPac NOR posted

Attention all current entrants (thank you Steve) or those contemplating entry: The NOR has been slightly revised and will be posted imminently on Jibeset and on the SSS notice board. The most important change is that it now references the equipment requirements that we are actually using (LPMER)...

    Revised SSI?

I see there's a new revision to the Standing Sailing Instructions as of 3/26. To save us all an easter egg hunt, could the Board give us a hint as to what's been changed? thanks Max

    Inspectors needed!

If you've been hanging out with SSS for a few years, and you're a reasonably conscientious person, how about volunteering to inspect a LongPac boat or two? It doesn't take much of your time, and you might find some good ideas to steal. Not a problem if you're planning to do the race yourself...

    Corinthian Race date?

The NOR states that the Corinthian Race is on March 21, but the YRA calendar handout has it on March 28. Which date is correct?

    Transportation available in/around Hanalei

Donald, one of my frequent crewmembers for racing near home, will be on vacation in Hanalei July 15-25. He will have a car and has generously offered help with rides if you need to run errands there. Feel free to email him: dgdellis at gmail dot com. I'll see if I can dig up a phone number too...

    Issues with Corinthian race ASIs

The Additional Race Instructions for the Corinthian Race describe two courses. I have a few questions and concerns about this change. 1. There's very little difference between the two courses: going to Pt. Stuart instead of Little Harding makes a small change in direction in the first two legs...

    Rudder failure

Here are a couple. It's pretty crude and could be made a lot lighter, but I worked with materials I know: wood and sheet metal.

    Rudder failure

Solar Wind has dropped out of the LongPac. We lost the rudder during the return leg of the OYRA Farallones race Saturday. Beetle Rob suggested that I recount the experience and any lessons learned here on the forum. How did it happen? Well, we didn’t hit anything. Wind and sea were moderate by...

    Tentative 2013 race dates

Here's our tentative 2013 racing schedule. No guarantees, but it'll probably stay like this. The Three Bridge Fiasco date in particular should be solid. Jan. 26 Three Bridge Fiasco Mar. 16 Corinthian Apr. 27 Round the Rocks May 18 SH Farallones June 19-25 LongPac Aug. 17 Half Moon Bay...
