    I'm in a Bind, Literally

It is totally my own fault. When I installed the new lower rudder bushing I purposely left it tight, thinking a little extra friction would let me leave the tiller for a moment without engaging the autopilot. However during the Farallones race I realized this just won't do. The little bit of...

    Nightmare's Saga

As a backup for weather data I bought a Tecsun PL-880, made by Kaito, and loaded the Black Cat app on the iPad. I can occasionally tune in Honolulu and hear the fax signal but there is too much noise to decode a clear picture. Talking with Ken, our local ham guru, he suggested being on the water...

    Nightmare's Saga

My wife came to help this weekend so we tackled those projects that require two people. Re-bedding the jib tracks and re-installing the toe rails.

Here is the Jetboil in its gimbal mounted to the mast. The mast seems to be the most efficient location, and the mount is a quick connect if I need to move it out of the way. The cup locks in place so I can pour from the whole assembly. If my hand were to slip the system returns upright.

    Nightmare's Saga

Last weekend found us in Prescott AZ for my nephew's graduation from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. He heads from there to Salem OR. for a job with Garmin in avionics. Sharp young man. Yes, I am a proud uncle :) On our way home we made a couple...

    Nightmare's Saga

Some of the groceries arrived! The freeze dried stuff anyway. I agree with most, that the ones with meat are very high in sodium, and I don't think the meat is very tasty. My selection is vegetarian and have tried most of them previously. I really like the Louisana red beans and rice. While at...

    Nightmare's Saga

I've been missing out on some sailing lately, but Nightmare is continuing to get ready for SHTP. The repair on the bow has been stable so it got some gelcoat. A fresh coat of bottom paint and a new through hull and speed transducer. A new set of rudder bearings. Replaced the backstay and...

    Nightmare's Saga

While others were swapping SHTP plans and racing their e-rudders I was otherwise engaged. Mother Nature dumped 18+ inches of fresh snow on my neighborhood. I am the snowplow guy for our private road and a couple other spots in town. Friday I started by 04:00 and Saturday by 06:00. Plow, take a...

    Alternative means of propulsion

This could turn into quite a discussion of what ifs etc. It doesn't alter my strategy for getting to Hawaii, or sailing in general, at all. There is not much between here and Hawaii but we still have to get out the Gate I only refer to the line I hear from time to time, not so much from racers...

    Emergency Boarding Ladder

I made two of these from an old halyard. Loop the top around the stern rail and use a light line slip knot to keep them bundled. I did hang one from a halyard and climbed it. Doing it in a seaway at speed would be a challenge.! Here is a youtube link to a nice tutorial...

    Hand Holds and Disco Lights

Yeah, those cheep rolls of stick on led lights sure are bright. Probably should have sprung for the multi color set. Sure makes it nice to work on things and find those fasteners I drop! I wasn't going to install hand holds since Nightmare isn't too beamy. Then, just before Long-Pac I saw a...
