    What I Saw

"Boulettes Larder, my favorite restaurant over there, is still in business." The place that serves bacon cheeseburgers that look like meat bits with raw eggs?

Online metal shops and my Monitor

SendCutSend is indeed remarkable. I uploaded the DXF file last Thursday and the parts arrived yesterday: $104 w/free shipping. The bottom plate added another $41. The plates match the drawings precisely. Big thanks to Breezetrees for the DXFs and PDFs, and to GBR for the advice. I'm...

Online metal shops and my Monitor

Thank you, Breeze and GBR (both Mikes I think). GBR, I've used Winchinox and plan to use it on the old plates, to which the new plates will be bolted. This should discourage crevice corrosion between the plates. The electropolishing process should do the same for the new plates, while...

Online metal shops and my Monitor

Getting back to this... SCS will create a CAD file (which they retain) and then give me an estimate for the plates. But they don't do electropolishing - any local recommendations for that? Or if I get a CAD file made, there are other sites who will quote on the spot, and some do the polishing...

Online metal shops and my Monitor

Great idea, and I could also see approx. how they'll look. I wish SCS offered polishing. I have the stuff to do it if the parts come back smooth, but that's a big "if." I'll also need a plate welded on the bottom. Here's the project:

Online metal shops and my Monitor

This is timely - thanks! I've completed my pattern and will confirm it on the boat tomorrow. It's a piece about 22" long (x2) and in keeping with Surprise!'s appearance standards, it has a long, sweeping curve to its top edge that would be a challenge to draw in software, even if I knew how...

    Not the same story

Are we getting those from the same guy in the foothills (Placerville?) who had the mold? I tracked him down in 2010 and he was reluctant to make them then - surely you've found someone else by now - who maybe doesn't know how to braze bronze?

    TBF photos 2025

I have just a few. It was a frustrating day but as I mentioned to a couple people back at the club, "We weren't in Buffalo."

2025 Three Bridge Fiasco Race Prep

To say the models are in disagreement is an understatement! Too bad we didn't hear from our resident meteorologist Wednesday night. What says the assembled multitude - clockwise, counter, or club bar?

    Sailing Tomorrow

Nice! It looks like you're anchored over by the Sea Scout base. My newish propane heater is INOP already. It lights but goes out shortly after it's warmed up. I'm glad yours is workin'

    Service bulletin

Yep, that was another thing I had to do to Surprise! which never made it to my blog. The PO had replaced the original mounts with harder ones from PYI. At idle the engine would rattle your teeth. We replaced the mounts with the stock squishy ones from Yanmar. Mucho better! Looks like good...

    New Boat 4 Sled

Great news! With all the regulatory entanglements these days, I feared the worst.

    Not the same story

Absent the usual "Who's going?" forum thread, this (^) is actually a key piece of data. The fewest number of SHTP racers was eight (in 2002), and that was when everything in Kauai was much cheaper. As it was, the awards dinner was a potluck on the beach, there was no race HQ, etc. Since there...

    New Boat 4 Sled

I'm so sorry to hear this Milly! Here's a photo that David West posted on FB. I'm trying to imagine how you'd lift long enough sections to get it back on the pilings, and what kind of equipment you'd use.

PSA: Please order your 2025 PHRF cert now

From the "Opening Fiasco Registration" thread: "The PHRF requirement, and exceptions, for Fiasco will be pretty much the same as last year." This means you should be able to use your 2024 PHRF certificate for the 2025 3BF.

    What I Saw

Congratulations! It looked like a smooth ride indeed.

    What I Saw

It looks like a spinnaker run going out, some drifting and then a broad reach coming back. Greg's typical good planning! Just now Akumu is making 6.6 knots due west in 8 knots of breeze. Akumu's former owner in Michigan, Libby Tomlinson, is Ragtime!'s current owner. Both boats were/are named...

    Sss raid

Surprise! enjoyed her cruise to Tomales Bay so much that she might be persuaded to do another one and be a support boat for a SSS RAID. Two or three skippers who can't sleep on their little boats could sleep aboard, there could be raft-ups, meals cooked, the head could be used, etc. It would...

    Website & Forum Migration (Nov 13, 2024)

Sorry if this was there earlier and I didn't see it... The "Join!" page shows that the fees include shirts. While that should be the case, my understanding is that shirts are now extra.
