    New Boat 4 Sled

The what: I suspect it’s the private fog horn that previously occupied the end of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf. The why? Well that’s pretty obvious: there ain’t no end of the wharf any more.

From my perspective, it’s a testimonial to the designer/builders of that structure that it hadn’t broken up completely before getting to shore. There’s news footage of it traveling along 85% submerged before making landfall.

Your post suggests you’ve never been in a life raft. Correct?

Cruising the California Channel Islands This book is long out of print, but might be available from used book sellers. Brian Fagan was a UCSB Prof and sailor out of Santa Barbara. I met him there many decades ago. PS. - I don’t know how much of this book is also in Fagan’s newer “The Cruising...

Another photo of SAGA’s owner and 110 sailor Kimo Mackey of Bainbridge Island, WA. An interesting part of SAGA’s history is that around 1939-1940 she was owned by Myron Spaulding and raced on SF Bay.

Interesting… DOGSMILE is going up the Grenville Channel which tends to be a funnel for NW wind. Looks like torture. Here is a photo I took in Grenville Channel in June a few years ago on a calm day. And yes, this is a color photo.

That’s a helluva stairway! Not something you’ll see in most boatyards. In the stern shot, I noticed the fairly large nitrogen gas cylinder. Many years ago, I had a quite nice steel motorsailer as a dock neighbor. The motorsailer had large hollow steel rub-rails and I learned that they were...

Round the Rocks Stories / Whoppers here

The numbers say a lot about the 2023 SSS Round the Rocks Race: 109 Entries (about a third singlehanded and two-thirds doublehanded); 75 DNF’s and only 3 singlehanded and 13 doublehanded finishers before the time limit. The combination of reinforced ebb and variable wind conditions made this a...

    New Boat 4 Sled

In the Spring of 1978, when my daughter was three and my son not yet a glimmer, I bought a copy of a cute little “children’s” sailing storybook called “Sailing on Firefly” featuring the adventures of George the turtle and Robert the bear. Coincidentally, two of my brothers are named George and...

    New Boat 4 Sled

Many decades ago, I worked with a very talented and creative architectural model builder. We used quite a variety of materials and a lot of basswood, but also took advantage of cross-over technologies from other fields. One time we needed to make a scale model PG&E transmission tower, one of...

To really really appreciate that bow, one must see what’s underneath. And by the way, that flag is a hint as to where it was built.
