2016 Sail Down to Sequoia Yacht Club

Philpott

Cal 2-27 Dura Mater
The Singlehanded Sailing Society has once again been invited to Sail Down to Sequoia Yacht Club. The date is November 5/6, leaving from McCovey Cove @ Noon on Saturday November 5. Since it is not clear whether it is a Cruise-In or a Cruise-Out, and since it doesn't matter, it will henceforth be referred to as a Sail Down.

It is neither a race nor a singlehanded event, although last year saw lots of singlehanders and even some very subtle racing. This year's behavior cannot be predicted, but there will be NO PINWHEEL OF DEATH since there are no marks to round on the way down. The Friends and Family award for most people aboard will again be awarded, as will furthest-travelled award, the youngest person aboard award and any other awards we all so choose. Food will be provided by the SSS and cupcakes will be baked. The Sequoia Yacht Club has a fabulous deck and very convivial members. Yes, convivial. They are all very friendly, too. Located in Redwood Shores, it is perfectly attained via a long spinnaker run. Place it upon your calendar before you forget.

Maybe I won't have to take the cover off the main (again). Wouldn't want the boat to get all tippy 'n stuff.

Check the March 2016 Latitude starting at page 82. Anything look appealing?

I just confirmed our 2016 SailDown to Sequoia Yacht Club. We are expected the weekend of November 5/6. Those Sequoians are very nice people, their clubhouse is mighty fine, and their guest dock and amenities are splendiferous. So put it on your calendar and sail on down. We'll start in McCovey Cove again @ High Noon. And, as per last year's reminder:

If you can’t persuade anyone to sail with you, if you can’t bribe friends and no one will let your borrow their children, take note: This is the Singlehanded Sailing Society. It’s okay to come solo.

1.Cruisers may drink martoonis, but they begin when the "Sun is over the yardarm" -- somewhere in the world. (But don't ask them what a yardarm is.)

2.Cruisers come equipped with every doodad West Marine ever thought of selling. Most still have their price tags attached.

3.Cruising boats have cute names often with mild sexual innuendos or cute "SEA" take offs.

4.Cruisers do have a copy of the "Rules of the Road," but not only is the price sticker still attached, the book is still wrapped in its plastic packaging.

5.Serious SF Bay cruisers seldom stray further than their berths since they can get all their "cruising" in without having to buy those sailing gloves in the above list or try to figure out what to do with the sail cover since there's no room left anywhere on board to stow it.

Puleaze people. It takes downright panache for a cruiser to race her sailboat.

I will certainly be there this year, along with my Big Bimini, full galley, 150' of anchor chain, water heater, and Corian countertops. I'll race ya, too.

Try to keep up ;)

Since the have a BBQ there I won't have to mount mine. That's about as croozy as I get ;)

I like Ragtime! 's comment: "Wouldn't want the boat to get all tippy 'n stuff."
Maybe I can talk the Missus into accompanying, maybe.

Tom Patterson has suggested an "oldest SSS hat" prize. Prolly cuz he has a really old hat. To assuage my suspicious mind, he has offered to wash, iron and return the beauteous Tommy Bahama hawaiian shirt, which he received as a prize last year for doing something. What was it? Maybe he can remind us. Maybe that will be the perpetual prize. There will also be a kite, although I don't know if I can promise another Barbie kite like last year's. Barbie seems to be an endangered item, poor thing. Synthia won that one. Dunno if she let Flippy fly Barbie in Warsaw.

To refresh Jackie's memory, last year I won a quite special Jimmy Buffett "Margaritaville" shirt (size L) for showing up with the oldest SSS shirt: 1984 Farallones Race. I promised to not enter again and proposed that the only worn once, freshly washed/ironed Buffett shirt could become a perpetual trophy. As for the "oldest SSS hat" prize, last year Jonathan G. spontaneously proposed a prize for the ragged hat on his head. I doubt I have one any older.

Tom

Flippy might need to meet Whalie. Not really a whale, but actually a very very big, but friendly shark.

Regarding the Sail Down/ Cruise Out to the Sequoia Yacht Club, I have been getting questions regarding the prizes. Huh. I thought the draw would be the camaraderie, but it seems as though singlehanders are attracted to pretty shiny things.

Prizes for the following: The most family and/or friends aboard; The longest trip made between home port and the Sequoia Yacht Club in Redwood Shores (2015 winner was s/v Galaxsea); The youngest aboard (in 2015 this went to s/v Eyrie, for Synthia’s dog, Reveur), Oldest SSS shirt (in 2015 this prize went to s/v Cloud. Tom Patterson has lots of old clothes). In year 2016 there will be an additional prize: for the oldest SSS hat.

Members of the Sequoia Yacht Club were very friendly and good to us last year. We thank them ahead of time for their hospitality. Since the SSS is Not A Yacht Club we are particularly in their debt.

The Singlehanded Sailing Society will provide hamburgers, hotdogs and bocaburgers. Please bring other goodies to share. Drinks can be had from the Sequoia bar. Breakfast might be negotiated. There is some room near the clubhouse for rafting up, and slips can be had from the harbormaster. Details to dribble out next week and at the SSS meeting on Wednesday night at the Island Yacht Club, which will be the annual membership meeting as well as awards for the Vallejo 1-2.

Confirmations so far from: Green Buffalo, Kynntana, Cloud, Kabunza, Nightmare, Crane Wife, Red Sky, Irie and Dura Mater. Last year the Trip was on David Nabors’ birthday. If it is someone’s birthday this year I will bake a cake. Let me know

Imena try to make it. The catuation is still in force, so it'll mean planting a car or taking my bike on the boat or something.

It now appears that instead of sailing down, Joan and I will be sailing out from Coyote Point to wave at y'all as you zoom past, en route to RWC. We might drop by later in the afternoon to say "hi".

UPDATE: Most important - stay in the channel when you turn to starboard into Redwood Shores. Especially DO NOT IGNORE THE "2" RED because it is very shallow to the west of the channel.

There will be two hosts at the club. On Saturday Larry Mayne will be our host, and on Sunday it will be Stan Phillips, a sailor and skipper of the s/v Frequent Flyer.

Monitor VHF channel 72. There is a gate code and a restroom code but it has been determined that these should remain undisclosed on the internet. When you arrive, text an SSS member if you didn't memorize it at last night's meeting. Text me @ 510.681.5440 or email me @ [email protected]

If you would like to reserve a slip, spaces are arranged by Spinnaker Sailing. The phone number is 650.363.1390, www.spinnakersailing.com

Here is a site for the Sequoia Yacht Club. Find directions by water, a map of the harbor and phone numbers: https://www.sequoiayc.org/

See you in McCovey Cove @ noon on Saturday or down south later in the day! thank you for the photo by Christine Weaver off McCovey Cove in 2015.

Not looking so good for Iniscaw after all: the MD7A's enthusiasm for cooling is on the wane again. I'm going to be pulling the mixing elbow off and poking at its innards. Maybe I'll walk out to the end of the South Beach breakwater at noon and wave my greasy hands at you all. I should be able to drive in to Sequoia anyway.
