ACR has a service called 406Link <406link.com> that allows someone to use the "TEST" button on an EPIRB/PLB to send a "corrupted message" (one that won't trip the search boys) to an ACR ground station with your location. The basic service to the registered cell phone/email address is $40. The upgrade for $60 allows information to be sent to up to 5 addresses. There's an hyperlink that displays the EPIRB/PLB's position on a Google Earth map. If you're interested in letting someone "back home" know where you are and that you're okay, you might want to check this service out. Apparently it will work with some non-ACR units as well. Pat Broderick, the PacCup, not SSS guy.
