Alans New Boat goes *splash*

After a year of this-and-that, and even though the sailing rig is nowhere near finished, and the name got stuck in transit in Toronto or something. "Vingilot" went splash yesterday. SSS'ers in attendance including Phil MacFarlane, Synthia Petroka, Sylbia Seaberg, Max Crittenden. My Highland Games throwing friends John Thorn and Becky Zachau came out. Music friends Greg Reutsch and Leanne Bantasari were there, making me paranoid, because Greg built a FLAWLESS Windmill several years ago, and Vingilot is anything but flawless! Neighbors Gary and Mary, who have seen me puttering around "next door" for a year brought their border collie "Logan" down to the docks where he had big fun...too bad he missed playing with "Girlfriend".

Joan rows. Wow, it's a lot different from the aluminum skiff we have up in Puget Sound. That thing is a battleship!

The only other boat I ever row, much, is this 250 pound aluminum bombshell that we have at my in-laws house up on Puget Sound. My FIL set up the oars with the "oar-dealies" WAY too close to the handles. I made sure not to replicate this error, and actually the oars overlap a bit...about 3 inches. It was suggested to me that this would be the way to go. I think it is, but after rowing for years with my hands 2 feet apart, it takes some getting used to.

Happy dude? OH yeah! And the oars are gorgeous...laminated spruce, they don't weigh anything. I'm used to the Caveness oars that West Marine sells. They weigh a ton!

Somebody we all know took her out for a spin. "Girlfriend" was funny, the first time Synthia went out for a row, Girlfriend ran along the shore, all worried about why "mom" was g-g-g-going AWAY!!!!!. So the second time, we figured GF ought to go along.

It was a great day. Look for me rowing and/or sailing around the Alameda Estuary and around Richardson Bay this spring and summer. If you invite me aboard for a beer, you can take her out....honest!

Oh, and my PHRF Is in fact 492. I will OWN YOU ALL. :D
 
Sweet! I'd love to take a spin, love rowing and miss my Norseboat. Redwood City or Alameda either way.


One really cool row to do is the Petaluma River. Pick a day with the flood starting early morning at the launch site at Black Point, at the river mouth where Hwy 37 crosses. There is a ramp there. You can make it all the way to downtown Petaluma on the rising tide, to the turning basin, and then back on the ebb, about 13 nm each way. I did it a few years ago, the scenery is stunning. On the return the wind will likely be against you.

Congratulations Alan! Thanks for the invitation, beautiful boat and nice pix. I haven't looked at mine yet; I'll post here or on FB if they're any good.
