Dura Mater needs an engine

Philpott

Cal 2-27 Dura Mater
Her old engine, admittedly and legitimately 'old' has been declared 'toast'. Not a nice adjective, but there you have it. So, if you have an engine for her, please private message me. Her current engine? A Universal 2 cylinder M-15 with 11 hp. Sigh. Of course we can still sail, but probably won't go outside the gate too far without an engine.

Sorry to hear.
Three boats ago, I used a Honda 9.9 that would also charge my deep cycle battery. I changed the prop for less cavitation. They insist on being flushed with fresh water after each use; not difficult with the doohickey designed for the purpose.
Guessing it would take too many oatmeal cookies for a new Beta?

But for the less than the price of a engine you could have this nice Cal 29 with a Yanmar. You'd feel right at home in 2 more feet; wind-vane and AP would transfer right over.

Yeah, that's what Bob J says: A Honda 9.9 outboard with a long shaft and good strong bracket and an electric starter.

I would like a new Beta. Or even a gently used Beta. That would definitely represent many many cookies. There will probably be some necessary fabrications, too. Gian requires gluten-free treats. And of course more cookies for all the yard staff.

Betas look so similar to the Universal. Probably because they are both Kubota. We'll see. Cree knows a guy who knows a guy ... who might have an engine for me. We'll see come Friday. It's a process. At least DM is not on the hard, but in her own slip.

Still looking

Hi, There are some nicer reviews about this shop online, but not really cheap and not entirely sure about a remanufactured, likely raw water cooled engine. At least Lake Superior is not salt water. Better ask a lot of questions about the history and rebuild before paying for shipping and install.

The 5411/ M15 was apparently a fairly popular tractor engine, so maybe a remanufactured tractor engine could be another option. The tractor was apparently not that popular in the US. I got a new head for my Volvo engine in Holland, the shipping was the least of the worries. A block of that size is still a UPS, etc. package.

Rebuild kits for the M15/ 5411 / Z500 or Z-500 (apparently that is all the same Kubota engine) seem readily available for $400 on ebay. But if your old engine was raw water cooled it would probably be best to start with a different block and head (essentially everything) from a Kubota B5000, 5001, 5100 tractor or other freshwater cooled engine. There is a head on ebay for $300 or so. Testing and and remanufacturing a block like that should be easy work for a machine shop, as pressing in new sleeves.

The machine work and assembly should overall be not hard or that expensive (everything is expensive). You would save on install if you don't have to modify mounts and adapt to the transmission.

And if you have not done so, I would switch to freshwater cooled in the process.

You probably know most of this already.

Good luck! Jan

Thank you, Jan. Cree and Karl have found me an engine. A volvo. They are "preparing it" for Dura Mater. Whatever can that mean? I have no idea.

Hi,

Welcome to the club! Sweet Pea has a Volvo. Does it come with seat belts? Parts can be a bit more expensive, that is why they are called MD, but they are available. There is a shop in the UK, https://www.parts4engines.com, that has fairly decent prices, they are fair and deliver fast. If it is an MD7, try to get the hand crank option as a backup. And my recommendations are fresh water cooling and strainer for the intake. Cheers Jan
