Cal 2-27 Dura Mater
David of S/V Temerity here . Thursday 2040hrs position 37deg 54min 123deg 13 min.

Saw a whale about 90 min ago south of Pt Reyes. Green Buffalo is about 2nm W of me.

For some reason my radio reception is very weak for Green Buffalo and a number of other boats on Ch 69, even using 25 W for xmit. Also, right around the start of roll call, most of the AIS targets on my display dropped except Racer X, who is now 2.5 nm due South of me. Very mysterious, I hope my antenna is not messed up. Perhaps it is due to the coming of sunset and atmospheric effects. I guess we will see in the morning.

I am also not able to hail Green Buffalo or Domino on Ch 16 using the masthead or a handheld. Domino was a nice strong signal on ch 69 though. Perhaps no one is guarding ch 16. Oh well.

My new AP from Brian is working great.

And from Mike Jefferson on Mouton Noir:

Turning around. I'm worried I might miss my flight to Holland if I continue...

From David Nabors on Temerity: 1 out 6 (chocolate) bars down. It is now a slatfest here, no wind, just bobbing.

I have some disturbing radio issues, as I said in the other email . Maybe it is just nighttme atmospheric effects or something. I have some Game of Thrones episodes on the iPad, maybe it is just time to watch some TV and go to sleep like at home

Subject: Update from the desert

Hi Jan,Susan, and Max;
Thanks for the update. Mouton Noir had a tough night. Little wind, and it keeps oscillating by large amounts. We are sailing "well", but the wind is mostly generated by boat motion, so tacking angles are horrible. Very difficult to make westing. Anyway, I was pretty beat, and didn't get to roll call this morning. My position at 1035 is N37:31, W123:16. Currently wind has shigted north and we can get westing, but only 2 knots boat speed. Tijd is headed home. They passed a few yards away 2 hours ago, and are slowly motoring towards the gate from our current position (close enough!!). Jacqueline is about 2 miles to port, also heading west.

It is glassy and there is a fair amount of shipping traffic, fishing boats, and sea creatures. LOTS!! of living stuff last night passing by the Farallones. Splashing, breathing, bad breath... the usual stuff.

Currently we are flying the nylon "Code 0", which is working well. Carliane and I have discussed throwing in the towel, but will hang in there until tomorrow. The forecast looks dismal for finishing the race, but we have plenty of food, and are in no particular hurry to call it quits.
THe sailing is pretty frustrating. I think most will have tracks that look pretty gruesome, wandering around the GUlf of the Farallones like Moses. We have been up towards Pt REyes, and are now well south of the Farallones. Not pretty, but the LongPac never is.

I hope to get a few people tonight.

All the best,
Michael

Subject: Checkin July 10

Hello Jan, Max, and Susan,
It has been a light and frustrating day. Glassy seas, light air. Pleasant sailing, but the track looks like a dog's breakfast, and we have real troule getting west. LOots of whales, some quite close, and we saw some molas, a most peculiar fish right at the boat, along with a bird that looked very much like an albatross.

Reetirees I know of: TIJD, who motored by us a few feet away to say hello, and Southernaire, who is anchored tonight in Drakes Bay.

Here are positions as of 2000 hours July 10.
Crazy Rythmn: N37:34, W123:52. 210T, 3.2K
Galaxsea: N37:43, W124:00, 207T, 2.1K
Jacqueline: N37:40, W 123:22, 310T, 2.5K
Mouton Noir:N37:31, W123:24, 320T, 3K

Most other boats are spread out too far for VHF contact. No sign of Green Buffalo on VHF or SSB today.

As I was typing, the wind came up to 9 knots!!! So we rolled up the 150% nylon MPG and unrolled tehh 150% heavy genoa. The boat is actually heeling over!!

We may decide to bag it tomorrow, but no decision yet. The wind has been oscillating from true west to northwest to southwest, and always so light you need to sail large angles to get any speed on the boat. Basically difficult to sail west at all.

THings are fine on MN. Any info to pass along to the troops is appreciated.

All the best,
Michael

PHONE CALL from Mile Rock

RACER X was there for the race. Once out there, etc. determined it was not gonna be a race so they are headed in. Rich did say he and Mary never saw more than 5K of wind and boat speed never got above 3K. He did suffer an electrical meltdown on the way home which he said was "perfect timing" and all is well now. They should be home shortly.

Hi Jan

I think you sholud know where I am from the tracker. Is it not working? AIS and radio still seem to have reception problems. Position for Saturday 11 July 0700 PDT is 37 deg 50.1 min N 124 deg 58.5 min W

SOG 0.9 kt wind calm, sea state glassy Distance to touch line is still 80 nm.

Average VMG is 120/45 = 2.67 kt

Thanks

David

OK, I know what you mean though the tracker signal and these emails rely on the same satellite network. I guess I could have fallen overboard and the tracker would still work. From my recent track one might have suspected that.

I've just hit a patch of breeze so knock wood it will continue. Also I raised a cargo vessel on VHF that was 15nm away, he said my voice signal was good and he could see me on AIS, so that is less of a worry now.

I think I must be the northmost of the fleet. The J120 was doing very well early on, I wonder if he has hit the touchline yet.

I'm getting COAMPS data for wind, it is supposed to be very light for at least 24 hrs.

Best

David

TEXT message from VENTUS, he's too far south for vhf and working on his tan. I texted back that I want a selfie in that Speedo!!!

PHONE CALLS from THE FLYING PENGUIN and MOUTON NOIR, both outside the Gate headed home. Quote from Mike, "It's just lovely out here, just no wind." Says the wind, what wind there is, is oscillating between SW and NW so he was sailing large angles to true wind so very little west was happening.

John says he was prepared for 25 knots but not what he got. I posted his exact quotes on the Chatter forum. He's headed home and will be headed out of town soon.

Temerity Report Saturday 2000

Position: 37d 56.1m N 125d 52.6m W Course: 267 Speed: 4.0

Check-In: could not reach anyone on ch 69 or ch 16 at 2000 check-in time

Still beating beating beating into light air. Less than 40nm to turnaround.

Saw a whale at 1930. Whale was swimming north. Starting to worry about all the work I will be missing, I told them I'd probably be back Tuesday.

Sunday 2000 Report

Temerity

Position 37d 51.8m N 126d 04.7m W

Only about 30nm made good in 10 hours. The NW wind really needs to start!

Heard some static on Ch 69 at 2000 but could not raise anyone.

Made the turnaround at around 1000 this morning. Spent the whole of the day flying the
spin in light air. Very hot and sunny, all in all more like a Hawaii day, but with
very little wind.

Lots of wild life, some as previously reported. In the morning, several big whales
spouting an cruising along. Big single spouts , vertical like the smoke from a
chimney.

In the afternoon, 16:25 I saw a sea otter. This is pretty neat as I was then 179 nm W
of Point Bonita. He stuck his head up to look at me as I went by.

Several times today I have seen the fins of mola mola sticking up out of the water,
waiving. They look a bit like the fins of sea lions. Also, some by-the-wind-sailors
and other little floaty things.

At 17:30 a pod of pacific dolphins came zooming up to check Temerity out. These were
the two-toned kind. About 20 of them, arcing out of the water as they came, making big
splashes and noise. They played about the bows for a brief time, but I guess I wasn't
going fast enough to be fun for them, to they took off in the direction they had come
after less than a minute. I saw the again in the distance a couple of hours later.
Maybe they were rounding up some fish to eat.

At 8 AM I was still about 6 nm short of the line. It had been near calm for several hours before dawn. Light rain showers as the sun came up, very pretty. I haven't heard anyone on the radio in a long time. Shipping is also sparser out here.
As it happens, I will be hitting the line right at the longitude of the Golden Gate. This is not by intention, I had thought I would be further north. I guess I'll work out a return strategy after I study the coamps and maybe GRIBs this morning.
Crossed 126d 40m W line at 10:04:50 PDT
See attached screen clip from my navigation program.
OK, now to start crawling home. At least with the light air, it has been fairly easy to sleep.
