Half Moon Bay 2015

Philpott

Cal 2-27 Dura Mater
Nice wind offshore. Half Moon Bay buoy has averaged 15-20 knots this afternoon. Maybe Dura Mater wil finish within the time frame this year. Sigh. Thank you, Allen, for sending the slower boats off first, at least in the SSS starts.

IMG_1147.jpgIMG_1150.jpgIMG_1153.jpgIMG_1158.jpgThat was a fun race!

Lots of spinnaker time. Went for the route further out and felt like I was having a nice run.

Looking at the finish times, I think I would have fared better if I had waited to flub the spinnaker douse until after the finish.
I think I had the angle to finish with the kite. As an afterthought there is more room inside past the reef.
Elise was just ahead of me when they doused before the finish and I thought I would do the same. It had been feeling a bit hairy.
The guy got away then the sheet came free of the tweeker and it all thrashed around a bit, got hold of the sheet and got the beast in.
Then the jib blew up out of the bungee and the whole thing went to the top of the stay because the tack came free of the horn I forgot to re-tape.
Wrangled that back down, secured with sheets, and worked my way back to the finish under main.

I enjoyed visiting and dinner afterwords.
Slept solid rafted next to Eyrie, until 0430 when someone on the inside of another raft decided to leave, causing a bit of commotion.

Enjoyed breakfast at the club in the morning but it didn't sit well once out in the swell. I remember someone mentioned not eating greasy food before a sail.
Tried to sail back but the 2.5 knots wouldn't cut it. So we motor sailed, took a nap, and made it to our slip by 1730

Big thank you to our race committee, and Half Moon Bay YC for their hospitality.

I agree with Nightmare - a really fun race! I also wonder if the low road was favored? I took the high road because I had to something different to catch up with Eyrie, but alas it did not pay out. But this was still my favorite race of the year.

Highlights:
* A spinnaker start out the gate - beat that!
* Sailing spinnaker for nearly the entire race. it was a total spinnaker clinic for me -- see lowlights too.
* The last few miles to the finish. I went in all guns blazing and was just having a blast. Definitely rounded up a few times, but the surfing kept me smiling all the way to the dock.

Lowlights:
* Watching Eyrie get ahead of me at the start. While she was busy racing (setting her spin and all that) I was enjoying a chat with Even Keel, who was nice enough to pay Rock On a compliment. Vanity will get you every time.
* Wrapping the spinnaker around the forestay on my first gybe just before the gate. How did that happen?
* Wrapping the spinnaker for a second time upon re-raising it. This time, I think it was laziness - I should have re-run the tapes better and double-checked my sheets. I had to watch Elise take off ahead of me as a result -- we were neck and neck at that point and it would have been nice to see if my Olson 25 had any chance of keeping up with an Express 27 downwind. Doubtful, but I was willing to give it a try;)
* Wrapping the spinnaker on another gybe about a mile from Colorado reef. Did I really do that again? By this time, I figured out that I was not easing the sheet and guy enough on my gybes. Oh well, lessons learned.

Sail back Sunday was mostly a motor (until you got inside the bay.) Brought a friend of mine and his father along for the ride. They were great fun.

Thanks to the RC for a great race!
