Hanalei Flood Relief

In April, Kauai and particularly the North Shore experienced devastating rain and flooding. The SSS is asking members to help as much as they can. The Club has already made a donation.

This past weekend a storm passed over Kauai that brought record breaking rainfall and flooding and later left this island dramatically and perhaps irreparably changed for good. There has been damage throughout different parts of this island, but the absolute worse has been on the North Shore of Kauai. CNN meteorologist Pedram Javaheri stated, “The town of Wainiha alone had 33 inches of rainfall in 24 hours and for context, that amount of rainfall would climatologically take nearly 18 months to fall in London and over 24 months to fall in Los Angeles.” Just so you can understand the extent of this damage, there are people who have lost their homes, cars, and belongings, there were people who were stranded for a couple days awaiting airlift to safety, there are so many animals who have been displaced and harmed, complete roads are gone from flooding, mudslides, and debris, all of the sand and debris has drained the water from Hanalei Bay destroying the reef and marine life there. This island is now in desperate need of rebuilding and lending help to those who are suffering from this flooding, along with all of the animals that need our help and helping to restore the land.

Because of our long connection with the Island and Hanalei Bay, we are sure that many of you will wish to help. Donations may be made here:

Please indicate that your donation is to be made for Hanalei Flood Relief, and that you are associated with the SSS/Singlehanded Transpacific Race.

I made a donation and note there is a need for volunteers for various projects. I wonder if our group should consider doing something for the community for a day or two if the need continues into July?

Great idea, Mike. It's official: You're the SSS Hanalei Bay Flood Relief Kahuna.

Hey Mike -
if you don't mind, please check with me first.
I've already been in touch on behalf of the SSS and it would be best to coordinate rather than our usual random and confusing (to others) approach.

Best,
DH

I would be willing to help as well when I get there. I design and build custom houses for a living so I would be happy to help in whatever way is needed.

I spoke with the director of Malama Kauai last night -
They are keeping tabs on our donations, and are very grateful.
Keep 'em coming!

I discussed our arrival times and that folks had expressed an interest in helping directly.
Basically, they would welcome any assistance on the ground, but as the situation is so fluid, it's really to soon too predict specifically what will be needed by July.

We agreed to keep in touch; the RC arrives on or around 7/2, and we agreed that it would be best to meet up then and see what the opportunities to help directly are at that point.

From there, we can figure out who-wants-to-do-what-when at tree time(s).

Best,
DH

Dave,

No Problem. I will be available as a volunteer when I arrive so count me in on any projects where help is needed.

Mike
