Insurance canceled because you ....

I have raced the Bermuda 1-2 three times. Obviously self insured to/from Bermuda.
This past summer we did the Marion/Bermuda race on our new to us J42. Prior to leaving I called our insurance carrier (Geico) and told them we had 4 experienced sailors, answered all their questions about gear (AIS, EPIRB, LifeRaft, VHF, SATPHONE, etc) and the day we started (as we were starting) they emailed that we didn't have any ocean experience and weren't covering us. Screw that... So we won our class. Then Mrs. Dianthus and I sailed back to Chesapeake Bay by ourselves and I exchanged an email w/ Geico, explaning how they were incorrect.
Months later they said they were canceling/not renewing our insurance because we sailed outside the limits of coverage. On either of my two boats.
I appealed and said I was self insuring and they were not at risk.
Interestingly when I wrote the insurance commission, Geico investigated and found that they were at fault bc I DID tell them we had experience and yes, they would continue to cover me. By then I had already found other coverage and said No Thanks. And they still wouldn't cover me if I did this again.

Yeah, I was stupid and said something that clued them in to the fact that I sailed outside of my coverage, but what has been your experience with this?
Who do you insure with when you're not sailing and have crew? And does your carrier get unhappy with you?
