My sailing hero, Michael Richey, died just before Christmas. He was the kind of Englishman who would say that he'd "done a little sailing" - by which he meant that he'd only crossed the Atlantic 13 times solo in the folkboat Jester - the last time when he was 80. He kept going through tough times at sea by imaging that, if he were lost, people would say that least he went doing what he loved to do. Bloody hell, no, he said! He wanted to go with clean sheets, a tot of whiskey and a priest. He managed that, at 92.
