New Boat 4 Sled

Ironic after hundreds of thousands of miles at sea, including Rounding Cape Horn 89 years ago, Commodore Tompkins aboard his Wylie39 FLASHGIRL was boarded yesterday afternoon sailing outbound in Raccoon Straits, at the beginning of his final voyage westward across the Pacific.
Although Commodore was sure he had one aboard, FLASHGIRL's USCG Type 4 Throwable Device or cushion could not be found. With a warning from the Coasties they could be cited, Commodore and crew altered for Sausalito to procure the required piece of safety equipment at a local marine outlet. Ironically again, the missing throwable was found under a bagged sail and, now legal, FLASHGIRL and her 3 crew cleared the Golden Gate at 1630 in a building westerly. Good Sailing to them!
Congrats to Commodore, Eric, and ? on completing their winter passage this morning from SF Bay to Honolulu onboard 39' FLASHGIRL in the time of 18 days. To avoid Pacific low pressure systems, they conservatively sailed a course deep south to latitude 19 degrees, 36 minutes N, same latitude as Cape Kumakahi on the Big Island of Hawaii.

I should also mention that yesterday, Feb. 26th , was also Commodore's 93rd birthday. Happy Birthday, Good Sir!

And macapuna ice cream. Don't forget the macapuna.
Dear Jackie, Macapuno is not a sea story or a way to sail faster to Hawaii. Macapuno is Marianne's coconut ice cream, a prize for those who correctly answer the quizzes I've posted. After cancer I've lowered my sugar intake and Macapuno is no longer available at CBC. But other worthy prizes are yours to discover by answering correctly.

Here is your quiz for today. Both questions must be answered correctly, and no second guesses.

1. What US President carried Marianne's Icecream onboard Air Force One as treats for aides and Press Corp?
2. What two people in the photo below are Star Class World's Champions? (names)

Thank you Ants! I'm sorry, but neither answer is correct. I know there are reticent SSS members out there that know the answers. Time to speak up before I unpost. Hint: the two Star Class World's Champs in the photo were related.

1. The 46th President, Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. onboard the flight back to Washington after his visit to Capitola in Jan 2023 to survey the storm damage.
2. Mary & Skip Etchells of Greenwich, CT.. The young kid in the photo is the young Skip Allan who was assigned to be the “Boat Boy” for Skip and Mary when they came to Newport, CA. Skip A. did later crew for Skip E., but we should let him tell that story.

Look at the deck of that Star. Gorgeous!

Thank you Tom P for the correct answers. Skip and Mary Etchells won the Star Worlds Championship in 1951, Mary the only woman ever to do so. Mary retired from crewing 10 years later, to be replaced by sleddog. The two Skips finished 3rd out of 72 boats in the 1962 Star Worlds in Cascais, Portugal. Skip Etchells was inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2023. His Old Greenwich Boat Company built hundreds of Stars, Blue Jays, Moths, and Lightnings of the most impeccable quality and beauty. His Etchells 22 design endures as one of the most competitive One Design Classes ever.
