old GPS MAP units

Is there any point in using an older GPS MAP unit like the Garmin GPS MAP 76 or a Magellan FX 324 MAP ?

I want the Garmin 78sc, but I have a 'new in the box' Magellan FX 324 MAP that came with the sailboat and can get a Garmin 76 for song.

Just sailing in the bay and want to get better at navigating with GPS and using charts. Not sure about using these older units for that purpose.

Thanks in advance - Denny from Sebastopol

Personally speaking, they'd better be! I too want a new one...but our two old ones really do just fine.

I haven't connected my old 76 to my computer...I dumped the computer cord by mistake. But otherwise it's fine.

Really a matter of budget.

Thanks for your reply -

I have an old Magellan FX324 - new in the box with no SD card. I have not been able to find the SD card that would be used for SF Bay. Magellan does not support that unit anymore. Also have found some older Garmin 76's for not much money and those are also not supported anymore.

So my thought was that since I want to use a GPS to get a better education in piloting and navigation I would be better off spending a little more and get a supported and newer GPS. I should've included this in my original question. Thanks - Denny

Sad to say, we do use our electronics!

The newer models make recording your tracks and analyzing your course very simple.
