Is there a way to get an email when you get a PM? I feel really bad about not responding to several PMs which I did not know I had received. It would be good to set up so I get a notification at my gmail when a PM is submitted on the forum

Yes.

Go to Settings (way upper right of screen).

Then on the Settings page select "General Settings" from the panel of choices on the left.

Then scroll down to Email Notification of New Private Messages: and check where it says Receive Email Notification of new Private Messages.
