Protests in 2013 races

Philpott

Cal 2-27 Dura Mater
There were three protests in the Round the Rocks race. Dura Mater was hit at the pin by Itinerant (double handed, no wind, what's up with that?), Tinker and Emerald were also involved in collisions. As Dura Mater's skipper, I will use this forum to explain how the protest process works for me. First of all, I raised my brand new red protest flag (thank you, Bob Johnston). After the race I went into the Berkeley Yacht Club and informed the Race Committee that I intended to file a formal protest. My understanding is that I must file a written protest within 48 hours of the close of the race. We agreed that it should be sent via email to Bob Johnston, Race Chair of the SSS. More later.

I'm very sorry to hear there were three collisions. (Not three protests, although there may be one or more.) In two cases the boats dropped out, which is the correct response when there is damage.

At this point it's best not to go public about the details, since that could compromise the protest committee's work if it comes to that. Hopefully it won't.

We all heard you on the radio :) Hope your collision didn't result in damage. We had some unsavory moments during Corinthian, but mostly avoided any close encounters this Saturday. Had some tight crossing both at the first upwind leg and then short tacking up the Richmond shore, but everyone was aware and doing the right things. Bummer for Peter and Tinker, both SH guys. Hope everyone gets repaired soon.
