Provisioning - MILK

There was some recent discussion elsewhere was about refrigeration and Milk. For those that like whole (cow) milk in their morning coffee or cereal, COSTCO now offers Organic Whole Milk in 8oz packets (18 to a box), no refrigeration required.

Many markets have super pasteurized milk in cartons. For the 2010 PacCup we had "fresh" milk with our instant oatmeal way too many times -- sometimes for dinner. Some raisins or brown sugar helped a little with the monotony. The fresh fruit ran out fairly quickly and mushy apple chunks just didn't work!

Thanks, fellas! I did not know that. To be fair, I had a zip lock bag full of those little 1/2 & 1/2 containers. Unzipped it the other day and ... eeeaauuew! Chunky bits. Maybe the shelf life of non dairy is longer? Still, for a shorter cruise, milk is always preferred. "In these fractious political times" don't want dairy vs non dairy to be an issue.

To maintain my girlish figure I always use skim milk on my raisin bran.

While eating my cereal dry Sunday morning, I stuck a piece of red tape over the fridge's breaker switch. The electricians here might take issue with this, so I'll move that circuit to a switchless breaker. The fridge has its own switch anyway.

Speaking of refrigeration, at the HMBYC a couple of us noted a connection (no pun intended) between the dessert they served and past SHTPs. In 2006, Lou Freeman raced over on his luxurious Swan 51, Seabird. During chat time on the SSB, Dr. Lou was asked if he remembered to bring the profiteroles. Then in 2008, Jim Fair served mint chocolate chip to the race committee upon arrival in Hanalei Bay. So these fridge details could be important to some bug-lighters. And I hear there's a rating credit if you bring enough to share.

Cereal is my usual breakfast on the boat, whether in the marina or sailing to Hawaii. A couple of years ago, after trying some alternatives such as soy, almond or oat milk, I switched to plain old powdered milk for the boat. So simple: a couple of heaping spoonfuls on top of the cereal, pump some water over it, stir, and adjust for appearance. Cheap, and it seems to last essentially forever. I guess I gravitate toward asceticism when it comes to life on the water.

Probably too rich for everyday cereal, but I do like some Strauss Creamery whole milk in my coffee. Today I wired up the cooler and packed up the boat. Heading to Tomales on Monday.

For current thinking about Whole Milk, Google “Health Benefits of Whole Milk.” Nutritionists are pretty much in agreement that there are significant health benefits particularly for older adults. We use Trader Joe’s Organic Whole Milk at home mostly with coffee and cereal. The Dairy Code on the containers (required by the State of CA) indicates that it’s actually Clover brand.
