Shad Lemke is heading out the gate for qualifier, riding Dark Horse

This from our cowboy:
(1/2) Came across a pod of whales by angel island last night upon leaving. One surfaced right under the boat, hit the hull but no damage, just startling.

How exciting!! Go Shad!! Love the name of his boat. What's weather looking like? I'm out here in the Mojave Desert for another 4 days where it's hot and windy. Curious what it's like to be offshore right now....

Autopilot is working great, solar is more than adiquite, wind is steady, ive been napping all day. life is good inr.ch/PIW4YYB - Shad Lemke

[Those of us you who are watching Shad Lemke’s tracker may have noticed that he left Richmond for his qualifier and headed for Red Rock. I asked him about it and here is his response]

I was dodging ships and trying to reef and trying to get the boat setup. That direction bought me some time to get situated. Took forever to get through raccoon strait with the flood. Glad to be out here after all the hard work on the boat.

[And later today April 28, 2018/ Saturday afternoon]

Pretty easy today. Seas are flat and the wind is pleasant. Had a very active night last night. Lots of shipping traffic. Lots of whales.

And then I started grilling him. He must be having an easy time of it so far, because he responded:

[Are you keeping warm?]

The breeze at night is a little chilly, but it’s still warmer than Montana.

[What are you having for dinner?]

Dinner is going to be Mountain House spaghetti. I’m never getting the breakfast skillet again, it was pretty bad.

[Any nausea?]

No nausea, Meclazine is working. I have been eating and drinking.

[How is a sail qualifier similar to a rodeo?]

Qualifier and horse: similar in that you have to deal with what you are dealt and don’t get bucked off!

[What is your horse’s name?]

I name my horses after the cowboy way of life, so they are: Lonesome, Busted Up, Broke, Misery and Ornery

[Do your favorite horse and your boat share any qualities?]

I guess both my boat and my horses are pretty responsive and you can get a lot out of them.

[Have you ever done barrel racing? This question is from a horse friend in Wisconsin/Amy from The Fiasco]

Never barrel raced, I rode broncs, got top horse in a ranch rodeo and showed working cowhorses.

[When do you plan to head offshore?]

My plan is to make my way north for another day until the wind picks up to 30 knots tomorrow night then broad reach SW for awhile, gybe and broad reach. I plan on heading offshore at least 100 miles on my way back down.

[What is it Skip says? “Yee doggies!”]

How to enter Lat/Lon on windy

Lee, in Windy.com is one able to plug in lat and long and locate a boat?

Here is an example, it is plugged into the URL call: https://www.windy.com/37.445/-122.533?45.575,9.533,7

That example puts you right on the coast.

Once there view the menu on the right. You can do various overlays. For example, if you want to see 850mb upper air pressure charts, you can select that with the bottom right slider.

That’s a great little app. It can follow me around as I shop for blueberries at Berkeley Bowl and drink coffee in my kitchen, usurping my identity. Alan, will you give it access to your location?

Okay, I get it now. I registered for the Windy.com app and site. Shad's tracker gives me his coordinates, which I then plug into the Windy.com app as "California 37.94,124.27" and it shows me that he is in 14 knots of wind, increasingly higher through tomorrow. 17 knots higher. That's a skittish boat. Good thing he has ridden broncos.

Sunday noon 042918

From Shad Lemke: The moon was really bright last night, seemed like daytime. I went to do a headsail change when a little rain squall passed over and after I [got] the number 3 down, I got a little nauseous so with the higher winds I just continued under the main last night which kept the boat steady and allowed me to get some sleep and made my nausea go away.

Had to hail a freighter that was a mile away and bearing down on me and asked him to change course.

I’m continuing today conservatively knowing heavy weather is on the way. I should make my turn around mark late tonight.

Took forever to get through raccoon strait with the flood. .

I guess that explains why his tacks through Raccoon Strait were so flat.

Can anyone explain why Garmin shows him with two tracks -- one for his over-all course, and second track covering late Friday night into Saturday morning, with slight variations between the two?

Just curious.

I don't know why, but the close points are separated by one minute, approximately. To see the double track you have to zoom in.

It appears he is in for a very brisk few days, through Wednesday. Maybe Tuesday he will be back in the Bay ?

Predictwind has him sailing later today into 30+ knots of wind on the aft quarter with 10-12' / 7 s seas. Should be a thoroughly unpleasant 12 hours or more. He was smart to go north.

What is the boat model?

O30, so he is used to getting wet. It's also going to be cold as hell so unpleasantness will be accompanied by misery.

This kind of sailing could grow on me. I watch from my couch while someone else does the dirty work.
