Attention, SSS racers!

IN PERSON MEETINGS IN ALAMEDA ARE COMING BACK. Please save the following dates, from 7-9 PM:

* Thursday August 8 for a SSS Drakes Bay Skippers Meeting & LongPac Awards Meeting
* Wednesday September 4 for a SSS Halfmoon Bay Skippers Meeting Drakes Bay Race Awards Meeting
* Wednesday October 2 for a SSS Vallejo 1-2 Skippers Meeting & Halfmoon Bay Race Awards Meeting
* Wednesday November 6 for a SSS Vallejo 1-2 Awards & 2024 General Membership Meeting

We plan to meet at Oakland YC, and we'd love to see you there.

Experimentally, I've uploaded a zipped SSS .ics calendar to the sfbaysss.org forum at https://www.sfbaysss.org/forum/showthread.php?3020-2024-SSS-Calendar&p=34658#post34658 . You can try downloading, unzipping, and then importing into your favorite calendar program to have reminders about registrations, races and meetings.

Credit for the agreement with Oakland YC goes to SSS Commodore Chris Case, so thank you Chris!

And thank you for racing with the SSS.

Will meetings still be available on Zoom?

I hope so. Getting to a weekday evening meeting from Marin or San Francisco is a real commitment.

Thanks,
John

Thank you, Jkalucki, for raising the topic.

I'm happy to take forum feedback on zoom vs in-person vs attempting both, at least for the next race or two. My recent experience elsewhere with another OA attempting both made for a poor experience on both sides: the in-person attendees had to wait around quite a while for network problems and A/V setup issues that just don't happen in an already-set-up home, and the remote attendees could not hear the questions or even some of the answers. But if we did try both for a couple of races, I expect we'd have experience with how many people "voted with their feet," and could use that to decide going forward.

Hello, SSS Racers.

This is a reminder that in person meetings at Oakland YC are coming back, and we'll be at OYC in ~2 weeks on Thursday August 8 from 1900 to 2100. Join your fellow SSS'ers to socialize and discuss racing.

We'll do an in-person skipper briefing for the upcoming Drakes Bay races.

In addition to Drakes Bay, we'll ask some Longpac and Singlehanded Farallones people to talk about their experiences.

As an added inducement, an anonymous member is covering the first $200 of the bar tab.

Thank you for racing with the SSS.

Richard

ps. In case you missed it, registration is open for Drakes Bay. Like all 2024 SSS races, this event is FREE to SSS members, and $35 for non-members. Just register by 2359 July 31. Costs go up $10 in the last week of registration (August 1 to 2359 August 7).

I'd like to offer a belated thank you to the person / people that made our in-person meeting at Oakland happen. And the anonymous donor that covered the first $200 of the bar bill.

Thank you for making the evening worth the drive.

It was nice to meet up, sorry to have slipped out early but the 05 turn 2 is still a challenge and I’m still reeling from the Hammer Pac Cup. Nice overview of Dbay Richard- many thanks for all you do.
Hoping to have The Pork Chop Xpress out for the last 2. Thanks for the drinks anon!

Belated follow up to jkalucki 's post.

At the Drakes Bay races, I ran two competitors' meetings, one on Zoom on Wednesday and a second in-person on Thursday.

I took attendance at each.

As a data point, we had four times as many SSS people at the in-person meeting.

To be fair, not all of the in-person meeting attendees raced in SSS Drakes Bay.

Thanks to the SSS folks that attend the August 8th in-person Skipper/Awards meeting at the Oakland YC! No trophies were given out for the Long Pac as all contestants withdrew from the race due to challenging weather conditions. Instead, we took some time to listen to the lessons learned by the Long Pac starters who were in attendance. It reminded me of the SSS skippers and awards meetings I attended when I was new to single handing, and on the steep part of the learning curve. Even if I didn't know anyone at the table, I learned simply eavesdropping on conversations. Hearing the more experienced single handers talk about their experience in the Long Pac, and the SHTP helped me see myself doing the same eventually. I cannot imagine being as inspired if the meetings in those days had been virtual. So come on by, you never know what you might learn, but be careful you might catch that infectious disease, bug-light-itis.

Attendance was about a dozen, which doesn't sound like much for those that remember the 50 to 60 that would attend pre-COVID, the SSS board understands it will be a while until attendance returns to former levels, so we'll continue to schedule these meetings, hopefully a full slate of them, beginning with the Three Bridge Fiasco if scheduling with hosting YC's is fruitful!

Let us know what you'd like to see at these meeting? What will make it worth the drive? Email at: [email protected]
See you on September 4th!

Chris Case, SSS Commodore

Thanks for putting the live meetings together Chris.

I have a 2.5 hour drive to attend, but don't mind.

The conversations before and after are invaluable!

Thanks for putting together the in-person meetings! One suggestion comes to mind: make a little more time after the meeting for socialization? I realize the hosting club might have time constraints on when they need to close their building. Maybe we could accomplish this by limiting meeting topics and earmarking time at the end of the meeting to chit-chat.
