Still Singlehanding

I don't do SSS stuff any more, but I'm still singlehanding. I'm extremely busy with school, so I haven't been over to see Alpha for a couple of months....MONTHS. Crazy! I have had a repair spinnaker pole ring sitting in my car since the end of September. Friday was such a gorgeous day that I finally got over to Oakland and installed it and checked on things. It was so pretty that I had to take her out for a spin on the Estuary.

I retired in June, so now I have weekdays free....except that I'm back in school taking music theory/harmony, class piano, voice and musicianship. This is all the stuff that I never got, despite playing clarinet and saxophones for 50+ years. Theory/harmony class is kicking my hiney so time is tight.

Alphas hull paint needs a touch-up, but the cockpit cover I made is holding up well and after a dry-diver once-over on the bottom, I took her out. Wow...quiet on a Friday in the winter. I think I saw 5 boats, total out on the estuary. I might find time to do RC for the 3BF this year. It'd be good to hear your voices on the radio.

The photo is of "Alpha" my Scottish Piper One Design. I think many of you know that I went back to Scotland last summer (2022) and crewed in their national championships. My skipper, Jim, and I and the "class mom" Rowena have kept up a friendship and plans are afoot for me to go back this coming summer. If it all works out, I'll be borrowing Jim's Albin Vega and singlehanding for 3-4 weeks in the Western Isles of Scotland. Joan isn't keen to go and Jim and his wife have a boat in Greece that they'll be using at that time. Rowena and her husband might come along on their Elizabethan 29 (think UK version of an Alberg 30). Hopefully I'll be able to walk about 25-30 miles of the West Highland Way as part of this trip.

Happy Retirement!

Since this is the SSS forum, I am obliged to suggest you do more sailing.

As for studying music, enjoy the challenge. I played (not well, mind you) piano, violin, and saxophone through high school using the traditional format, meaning the notes show rhythm, etc. About 7-8 years ago, I started playing ukulele with only the chords, strumming, and memory that was supposed to supply melody. My prior experience and current practice have not melded into something that makes sense. Go luck with your intensive approach.

Keep enjoying those sailing times!
