For those who do not get US Sailing's emails, here is a local but slightly different singlehanding event....

Register for the 2024 U.S. Singlehanded Championship!

WHEN: September 6-8, 2024

WHERE: Richmond Yacht Club, Richmond, CA

WHAT: In 1962, friends of George D. O’Day dedicated a USYRU (now US Sailing) trophy in his name for a national singlehanded championship. First sailed on Long Island Sound in the Finn Class, the championship was won by Peter J. Barrett who, if he had not lightly touched with his shoulder the rudder of a starboard tack boat he was ducking in the fifth race, which only he was aware of, would have won a Gold medal (rather than Silver) in the Finn at the 1964 Olympic Games. Initially sailed as a mixed event, in 2010, the decision was made to split the event, adding a separate event for women. In 2011, a trophy was awarded in honor of Helen Wills Hanley for the winner of the women’s division. This year the event will be held with the 2024 RS Aero North American Championship.

Championship Facts:
. 2024 Championship Competitors and boats:
- Men’s Category for the George D. O’Day Trophy: RS Aero 7
- Women’s Category for the Helen Hanley Torphy: RS Aero 5
. The championship is an open event (there is no selection process).
. RS Aero class membership is required. US Sailing membership is required at all levels of competition for U.S. citizens and resident- aliens in the Men’s RS Aero 7 and the Women’s RS Aero 5.
. Other nationalities must be members of their National Governing Body.
