replying to this thread/connecting might be helpful if you want one of the awards :) First/2nd in div and First/2nd or 3rd overall or rookie award.

Neat! I'll be sailing my home waters of SoCal, so won't be joining, but it sounds great. Forgive my abject ignorance, but what is the etymology of ZYC?

If I'm not mistaken, ZYC is Zavarin Yacht Club. Named for Sergei Zavarin, Elise's primary caretaker when Nathalie owned Elise. Friend, maintenance helper, photographer and occasional crew for several of us here. I haven't heard from Serge lately.
As you might guess, the ZYC has no building, no documents, no bank account, and no existence (that I'm aware of) other than as the namesake of the ZYC Challenge.

Can't make it - sorry.

But Bob...
It was just a lower.
Only 4 strands.
Wasn't very windy on the bay this weekend.
Wrap some duct tape around it to prevent injury.
Tie off a spare halyard or three.
What could possibly go wrong?
You could have made it.
:P

We talked about the halyard idea but we had to cross the Slot one more time and that shroud was on the windward side. We were okay for the season so we called it a day.

Did anyone finish today?

Red Sky and Nightmare stuck it out and just finished at around 2145.

Nathalie's response to this lame excuse? "Like 'My grandmother is sick'." Seriously, Bob? Ragtime! had three intact spreaders.

Congratulations on Brian / Red Sky for winning the 2017 ZYC Challenge overall
Congratulations on Greg / Nightmare for winning the Rookie division

yes ZYC stands for Zavarin Yacht Club named after its Commodore Serge Zavarin. ZYC holds the most prestigious solo sailing rally to the Lightship on the West Coast...complete with trophies and prizes.

Participants get to vote on the date for the following year's event. ZYC Challenge has only one course: around the lightship any which way and back to where it started (somewhere on the Bay) and one specificity: one person per boat. It is entirely free. Its goal is to make it as easy as can be to sail solo near coastal.

If you have done the event in the past and liked it - please spread the word. If you'd like to do the event next year, let me know and we can include you on the scheduling thread or just watch this space for date info.
