Help with Tracker

Just when you have figured out how to navigate the Forum you find that you are required to learn a new tech skill in order to follow the 20th Biennial Transpacific Singlehanded Yacht Race. Your child or grandchild is not due until the Fourth of July barbeque tomorrow afternoon. What to do? Never fear! Basic help is here! Very basic, but a bit of help.

Scroll down to just below the tracker and click on "See bigger map"
While holding down the left click thingie on your laptop or computer mouse, drag the cursor on your screen. Do you see how the whole map moves on your screen? No? Well, try again until it does.
Do that until all the boats are in the middle of the screen. Excellent!
Now. see the + and - in the upper right corner of your screen? click on the + once or twice until the boats are no longer clumped together.
Now you can click on the individual boats to see how fast they are going and other details.
Keep playing around. You'll figure it out. You can't break anything. Welcome to the SSS!

Thanks, Jackie. It seems we are seeing some early splits in the SHTP: 5 diving south, 9 choosing a more northerly track, and 8 suffering the cruel fate of being trapped overnight by a receding gradient windline west of the Farallones.

Can someone comment on the yesterday's start time? Did the fleet start as one, or did the 4 classes start at different times? If so, what were the start times?

Can someone comment on the yesterday's start time? Did the fleet start as one, or did the 4 classes start at different times? If so, what were the start times?

The cruel thing is the gradient wind didn't really come back to the coast today, so they are still mostly stuck. Probably the only thing keeping them all from going crazy is that it looks like each of them can see at least one other boat. Misery loves company. Drifting is infinitely more tolerable when you know you aren't the only one.

There were waves in the Straits. There were whitecaps. It was windy. Earlier in the day Mike Jefferson put too much oil into his generator and huge clouds of black smoke spewed out of Mouton Noir. George hit the dock leaving the harbor with his brand new bow pulpit but kept on going, promising to keep an eye on his bilge. Shama was serene and Peter Hogg looked handsome as ever. Let’s see, did I leave anything out? Oh, sure, but we’ll tell you next time we see you.

There was a kerfuffle as everybody pitched back and forth and shortened sail, and the boats that failed to do that slid sideways toward the gate. Cliff Shaw and I hitched a ride on Ragtime! with Bob Johnston who collected us from Sam’s dock. We waited around until everybody had started, then watched as the first boats disappeared over the horizon. That Ragtime! is fast! We beat the late starters out the gate, then circled around to harass Mike Jefferson, dipping behind him. He looked back with a HUGE grin on his face, and so did this new kid – Juri, who waved and waved – happy to be sailing off into the wild blue and increasingly foggy yonder.

And then, who was this, out in the Golden Gate? Dave Morris! Steering his RIB in those big conditions with one hand, taking point and shoot photographs with the other! Big grin. Cowboy hat. Boy oh boy. It was fun being out there! See you in Hanalei, Skip!
