Not the same story

And it was not to be ... Between large seas, potential lighting, slatting around for hours ... I didn't think it was worth the payout. Time goes by ...

Well... this happened. An indication that I must do the race to get myself a new belt buckle?!? 😭

Are we getting those from the same guy in the foothills (Placerville?) who had the mold? I tracked him down in 2010 and he was reluctant to make them then - surely you've found someone else by now - who maybe doesn't know how to braze bronze?

nope, same guy, or at least the same company; that's the thing with casting - we don't own the tooling, so unless we want to make a new tool ($$) he's it.
The post 2014 buckles all have this pre-fabbed buckle strap assembly, unfortunately.

CaB has an A2 again! I found something priced reasonably'ish for what it is (practically new from 2019 aka barely used), let's just hope it comes home safely now (checked baggage)! 1000002126.jpg

Pfew, we made it home safely, now I just need to find a window to try it out. I don't think anyone will get the picture but ...

Disposed of oil and put the new to me A2 in my ATN sock. Still want to swap the sock of the A1.5 with this new to me sock I just got. Also need to figure out what to do with the old A2 (i.e. pack it neatly).

A few small jobs: fuel filter and pre-fuel insert change. Swapped the A1.5 sock with the new to me sock and realized that the return line on that sock is not running through a pocket (it's simply hanging outside the sock, weird, concerning?). And put the A1.5 sock on Big.
Also dropped 190 for a bottom cleaning. And 340 for a new 2:1 fractional halyard and a 180 feet 2.2mm Dynema reeving line (not 100% sure yet where I'm going to rig it - I have a pair of spare/unused sheaves at the masthead, but no mast opening so I'm thinking of getting a line across the two sheaves to use as spare main halyard or a 1:1 fractional halyard (gaining a foot or so over the 2:1)).

It's looking good. Tentative plan: wrap up work around noon Friday, pack the car, get to CaB, load CaB, hoist sails and be on our way around 3, going S-W about 235 deg, turn around mid day Saturday and come back home.

Just need to get this lazy boy to get over his lethargic slump ...

In other news, my lease ends July 31. And it looks like the landlord is not keen to renew (may sell the home and move out of state - she lost her job). This would make logistics for the SHTP a puzzle. Third move in less than a year 😭

Lazy boy has prepared his s**t, as much as he can remember what offshore sailing demands.

The forecast is still looking good. U-turn at 6pm Saturday. Probably won't do that short downwind leg (don't think it's wise to try my new to me A2 as a starting leg for my QC). Slowest routing is 2 days 6 hrs.

I'm not a fan of these "romps" with no goals. Yeah, I hear you, there are plenty of goals: qualify, dust off, check that things still work ... But I like destinations. Could someone please plant a buoy out there for me to round?!?

Also ... Not looking forward to being sea sick 🥴

We'll see if I'm up for it tomorrow ...

I'll see if my to be ex is up to be the recipient of my float plan. I won't have sat comm, but will have an AIS transponder, and a tracker:

Now the real soul searching begins ... The obvious problem on my hands: work, taking 5-6 weeks off. My boss knows about the race but we have not discussed the specifics. Shipping, no, impractical and somewhere the steel of my cradle has been recycled; delivery, no, I like my mast up; so, it's me.
Creative thinking 1: work from the boat on the return trip?!? I don't see that working well as I spend most of my days on video conferences.
Creative thinking 2: do the race, get back online for work for a couple of weeks (months?), take 2-3 weeks off to sail back.
Creative thinking 3: mmh ...
