2013 late pac

The full moon is Sept 19, so why not start on the 19th ? That is a Thur. Assuming one covers 130 miles per day that would be thur-fri-sat-sun ..... But then another approach would be to pick the week starting on the 16th as a window and then on Sept 12th pick a start date that aligns with a good weather window.

I like your 'nother approach, which sounds very sensible, except I kind of need a date in my head. Unless really bad weather appears on the horizon, my suggestion would be that we shoot for the 16th. Noon would be slack tide. What do other people think?

Picking a week and waiting for the best weather sounds nice but most of us don't have that kind of time flexibility. A couple of other things to keep in mind for a qualifier cruise (a.k.a. latepac): The cruise starts when you leave your marina (provided you don't make a pit stop). So, If you left Alameda marina and return there you will cover something on the order of 20 nautical miles just getting out the gate and back to the marina. Only 380 to go. One other thing to keep in mind is that you are only required to reach a point 100 miles offshore after which you can sail in circles or do whatever you like to cover the distance. This means you are under no obligation to beat your brains out to get farther offshore if the weather makes that direction uncomfortable. Once the distance covered added to the required distance home adds up to 400, head for the barn and your done.

As for tides, I'd exit on a building ebb as slack doesn't last long at all. And I doubt there is any way I can accurately predict the return time so that will just be a play it by ear deal. One other thing to consider is that the trade for all that moonlight is stronger tides during that time of the month. And there look to be some seriously ripping early morning ebbs from the 16th to the 22nd.

Now, I just need to see if I can get a couple of days off in the middle of September, remount the solar panels, fix the leak over the quarter berth and maybe, just maybe...
