2023 Corinthian Race: Registraions are now open on jibeset

So, yes, we have options! If someone's feeling creative, I'd love to see their additional options, starting with "option I".

The whole point of not having published the SIs yet is that we can keep our RC options open, so long as we meet the NOR. Having said "GGYC start, 13 NM" I'd like to align with that too, of course.

Again, all of the forum posts are not rules like the NOR and SIs are, so BE SURE TO READ THE SAILING INSTRUCTIONS WHICH WILL BE PUBLISHED WEDNESDAY BEFORE THE RACE.

Thank you for racing with the SSS!

Richard, 2023 Race Co-Chair

"Again, all of the forum posts are not rules like the NOR and SIs are, so BE SURE TO READ THE SAILING INSTRUCTIONS WHICH WILL BE PUBLISHED WEDNESDAY BEFORE THE RACE."

Reitmeyer, you are a brilliant tactician.

Hello, BobJ.

At least for this year, we will not be using Corinthian YC.

I recognize this is a change from the "classic" version of the race as you and others ran it and raced it. And I'm sure you had great experiences with the classic one. But change will give everyone some new great experiences, and keep the race from getting boring. While last year was practically a shutout, I'm hopeful this will be a great year. We're off to a good start with all those Fiasco finishes...

Richard

FWIW: Long, long ago, for a year or two when CYC was not available and we started at GGYC, there was another course for the In the Bay Race, the name change due (IIRC) to the fact that we couldn't use CYC. It was shaped roughly like a broad arrow pointing southeast. I don't recall the exact marks, but they may have been:
Start at X
Blackaller
YRA 8
Blossom
Knox? or Little Harding?
Blossom again? doubtful, collision risk
Finish at X

Just to clarify, the Corinthian Yacht Club is not available?

No, we don't seem to have a receptive audience there to use their club. Anyone have an in with them, might be welcome to inquire on behalf of the SSS. As to the "Corinthian Race" I always thought it was used as an adjective and not a place name. I've always liked the thought that we're, above all else, corinthian racers.

The "Corinthian Race" was named for the yacht club. Peter Hogg was a member (Commodore) at the CYC back then. And, yes, there have been several times when the race was moved to the GGYC. Yacht Club management changes. Does the SSS have a list of CYC members who race in SSS races, especially the Corinthian? Club members are usually the folks who can put some pressure where it's needed.

It's fair to remind everyone that the GGYC has been unavailable several times over the years, too. Matter of fact in the 1980s the SSS bought a membership in the GGYC for an SSS sailor so there would be a "say" in things.

There’s significant historical precedent for SSS Race Chairs inventing new “In the Bay” races (with new names) often incorporating unusual and creative tactical challenges. Thank You! to Ants Uiga for the Three Bridge Fiasco.

Since the much loved Corinthian Race can’t start from CYC this year, is this an opportunity for something new with a new name?

The NOR is published and I really do not want to re-publish it and tell everyone to re-read it over a name change. Plus the name is in the YRA calendar, the printed Latitude 38 calendar, the jibeset page, emails I've sent, and this forum post. And probably many other places. So, no, a name change is not likely for this year.

However, I'm happy to be creative with courses because there's no SIs published. Courses DO have to start and end at GGYC and be 13 NM. If you've got one, post it with a new option letter and the distance

Here's an option I, for example:

My personal probelm with creativity is I'm new here, and I know people have deep attachment to traditions that I'm going to blunder over if I change things.

Dear Mr Reitmeyer,

Thank you for being so forthright and patient w the people who read (and respond to) this forum. Good thing you are not at the microphone facing the whole crowd in person. Whew! Nancy, Dazzler and I can get out of hand after a couple of non alcoholic drinks.

I don't think the current Corinthian leadership will come 'round for awhile, so a new course and name offers new opportunity next year. Corinthian, my dear Corinthian, may you rest in infamy. What other SSS has offered so many "opportunities" for crashes? I'm sure boatyards will be dismayed.

and now for something completely different.jpg

Regardless, you now offer us new courses. I like your most recent, the I. No matter which you choose, there will be complaints from the chattering classes. Thank you for your time and effort.

Given the requested limitations (GGYC and 13nm), my vote is to stay with Option A: Blackaller-S, Angel Is.-P, Little Harding-P, Blossom-S, Finish. It's the closest to the former course and just looks right. There's some strategy with how close to cut the lee of Angel Island and then getting through Raccoon Strait can be a challenge.

"D" is okay.

"I" causes congestion off the StFYC with boats rounding and heading back into the trailing boats before they've had a chance to spread out. The Corinthian Race has a history of collisions so consider the starting order to spread out the boats as best you can.

My two cents.

I don't see the need for a change to a great course.... the old one that went around Southampton. I understand the desire to not use SH so I like using YRA 23 or 24 as the leward mark for the (usual) run from Blackaller. A 13nm course would be the shortest on memory, would be a shame for it to be so short.

I don't want to put any further public pressure on you, but our races have always all been approximately 18-20 nm and I agree w Greg Nelsen about the traditional course length. I don't want a shorter, easier course. When I don't make the course time cutoff it makes me determined to pay closer attention to my tell tales and sail faster next time.

Thank you for your patience with us, Richard. We are a yammering crowd.

To all who provide feedback:

Thanks.

None of us are so perfect we can do this without guidance. Especially me.

All of you have more "institutional knowledge" of the SSS than I do. And better insight into the racers, our customers, than I do.

Your comments help me think about future races with a bit more insight.

So I do want to hear whatever you have to say, even though I may not change what I've already planned to do for the race de jour.

I cannot be very responsive, but I am reading.
