Cruise Out 2020

Problem is that the Napa Valley YC charges those big stink pots $45/night and it has been suggested that they might want to charge us the same amount, despite our sailors' memberships in yacht clubs (reciprocity and all that).

The last time we were up there with SJSC, (maybe 5 years ago), Napa YC didn't have much water at their dock, and we all anchored bow and stern in the stream. They didn't charge us; we landed our dinghys at their dock, and they let us use their wonderful barbecue pit and two large picnic tables. A pleasant dinghy ride (or walk) to town. It is a small, well kept, friendly club.
Your results may vary.

Maybe management has changed. That wasn’t offered.

Uh-oh! Will I need a dinghy? I guess I need one for Hanalei, anyway. I was gonna buy an inflatable kayak.

My little Achilles dinghy has only been out of its bag once since the 2008 SHTP. It still had genuine Hanalei Bay sand inside.

Recently some people cleaned and tested it. Fortunately it wasn't necessary to pull out its repair bag - the Achilles Heal.

It sounds like I may be able to use it in Napa.

Nyuck, nyuck!

ba-dump!

We could have a dinghy race. We'll need another prize. I've already ordered the kite, the Hawaiian shirt, Captain Ron, Sailing the Bay and the Jimmy Buffet CD. Ah Tradition. Something you can count on whenever everything else goes sideways.

I wonder if I could knock out a $60, 7 foot Portugese Dinghy and a pair of oars in time. If I could, I wonder if I could tow it....

Hey, you want new events, you need new prizes. You think we'll do this for nuthin'?

Alan is proposing to build a whole boat just for this. And remember how much you had to pump that foot pump to the fill up the Achilles?

Events = work = prize expectations!

SSS Cruise-Up-The-Napa

For the first time, we won’t rendezvous in McCovey Cove @ Noon.

Instead, we’ll meet up between Southampton Shoal and the entrance to Potrero Reach @ approximately 37 54 02234 N, 122 24 04759 W

November 7 @ Noon.

Once through the San Pablo Bay and up Mare Island Strait, we’ll go under the Vallejo-Mare Island Causeway Bridge which is just past the Vallejo Municipal Marina.

It’s probably best to ask the Bridge Operator for an opening when there are several boats ready to go through all at once. Wait for each other so the bridge operator doesn’t have to open it too many times. Bridge operators are reached via VHF channel 9.

Once through the Mare Island Causeway Bridge, keep an eye on your depth finder and stay between the channel markers.

Continue on through the Brazos Railroad Bridge, which remains open.
Its coordinates are: 38 12 32800 N, 122 18 24212 W.

The Brazos Railroad Bridge looks like this:

Brazos Bridge.jpg

Charlie’s dock is located to port just past the Brazos Railroad Bridge @ 38 12 43071 N, 122 18 32662 W
If you pass the Napa Valley Marina to port you’ve gone too far.

If you arrive after dark Charlie’s dock will have lights strung and his neighbors have agreed to take some of his boats off his dock so we can tie up to it. If there are too many of us some boats will anchor and get lifts to and from the dock on each other’s dinghies.

Remember that Charlie’s dock is Not A Yacht Club and his house is off limits, so don’t ask to use the bathrooms. Be Prepared. Bring your own food and drink. Bring your own folding chair and masks.

Any questions, post here or email me: [email protected] or call 510.681.5440

Any complaints, email Don Martin, Commodore.

Since I don't have a dinghy...
there don't seem to be any $50 dinghies or inflatable kayaks popping up on CL
I could make a 7 foot Portugese dinghy from two sheets of Home Depot plywood, some ripped 2 x 4's, leftover deck screws and PL Premium...

but what the heck would I do with it when the cruise-in is over? I do want a rowing boat but I'm thinking more along these lines... (big image, and no I won't try to row a 16 in ch model!)

and I'm occupied trying (still...) to get my windvane to work (bought the stainless steel for the trim tab shaft, and have foam from Greg Nelson to shape it...bought the sleeve bearings from McMaster-Carr last night).

and it's November and there probably won't be any wind
and it's a bluidy long way from San Mateo to Napa
and I HATE hate hate hate using the pooper on my boat

I think I'm going to pass on this one.
