Messing About on Boats

They are the abomination of desolation.

Okay, maybe that's a bit strong ... "They wouldn't be my preferred provision for going aloft."

I'll shorten it for you: NFW :D

Now SPRAY had ratlines, arguably the predecessor to mast steps. Somehow with her stubby gaff rig, mast hoops, leather-wrapped gaff jaws, pinrails, etc., the ratlines were just fine.

("Excuse me sir, your bias is showing.")

Noticed this artwork on S/A, looks like the same artist that did the SSS "Geek" poster long ago. Any info on that?

Well Bob, if I had a beautiful sport boat like a J92 then mast steps would be an abomination. On my salty double ender they look alright...at least that's what I tell myself. In reality I suffer from sport boat envy. Maybe I'll mortgage my house and buy a SC 50 before the 2018 SHTP...yeah and I'm going to pimp it out with mast steps.

Do they compromise the strength of a mast (hoo boy, wait'll we hear the responses on this one!)?
No, but I think the race committee should make them a requirement for the 2018 SHTP ;)

I'm not sure Bob really meant that ezzacly. It was an excuse to use big words. He was just showing off his vocabulary. I mean, look at the photograph. He loves Rags but deep down he wants a square rigger. With mast steps. I could go for mast steps. Would they add heft to DM's PHRF, d'you think?

Someone once asked Bob Perry which of his production double-enders were the best performing (or something like that), and he said the Tashibas. So there you go.

I wonder if Anna Stockel (SHTP Class of 2000) had mast steps on her Custom Santa Cruz 50, SUNDOWNER. I'm guessing not, but wouldn't that be funny!

I see IYC doesn't have us on their calendar for tonight. Hopefully the doors will be open.

"Yeah, I get that a lot." It's like my first car: A 1969 Mustang, a bit hopped up in back with mag wheels.

But it had a straight six.

I'll try to bring this thread back onto the tracks...I guess it is titled "messing about on boats", so anything goes

I just purchased a Norvane after months of debate and weighing all the pros and cons. The major pros being price/value, weight and doubles as emergency steering which I can attach an autotiller to. Should arrive in 2-4 weeks. One step closer...

Here's a demo of the emergency rudder

Dura Mater is a sport boat now? Outsider? Starboard!

I'm jealous, it's all jealousy talking. Although I could beat a Cal 2-27...now the shit talking has begun :o

I was watching the PacCup videos of Hula Girl surfing across the Pacific above all the chop and making it to Hawaii in 7 days...fast is fun, until you crash.
