New Boat 4 Sled

2) It was Bill Merrick who locked himself in the lazarette.

3) Rob MacFarlane, item 4.

6) Item 5 wasn't one of them.

Which skipper beat WILDFLOWER's excellent corrected time from the 1978 race, not once but three times in succession?

Which skipper lost the screws from her furler, was offered replacements and after discussing via SSB whether it was outside assistance, received them when the fleet unanimously voted to "screw her?"

Ok, I'll take a shot at the quiz:

1. 1984

2. Locked in a lazarette. (I'd heard the story but the name was unkown, however, according to BobJ it was Bill Merrick)

3. Shooting skeet, now why did I not think of that for this years non-pac?

4. Rumbleseat. I remember hearing Bruce describe his angst at taking a sawzall (or was it a chainsaw?) to her keel as he rebuilt that pretty boat. It was also the easiest boat to board at Alameda marina as you almost had to step down to it from the dock.

5. Colorblind. Can't recall seeing it at the marina lately but I know Greg sold it a couple of years ago or so.

6. No flaming torches.

7. Greg Morris who had many other colorful sayings.

That's my shot at it. Now, off to figure out where to mount the skeet launcher on the SC27...

Flaming torches probably was Ray Jason aboard Aventura in 1990. I had sailed over "free" (didn't pay entrance fee, tiring of rules changes and not in the loop without email capability). Ray and I rendezvoused at sea on the return at which time I tossed him a bottle of vodka to ease his passage and he tossed me some porno books! As the official juggler for the 49ers, he often juggled the torches...in fact did so at the awards party which was held at a rented beach house about halfway between the Pavilion and the Hanalei pier. They let me come and buy my supper. That would have been my 3rd SHTP, but that didn't happen till later.

Above respondents are closing in on answering all 7 SHTP Trivia correctly. However, no one has done so yet.
1.HARRIER was first to answer correctly that he first raced in the SHTP in 1984.
2. RAGTIME answered #2 correctly. It was Bill Merrick who accidentally locked himself in the lazarette.
3. RAGTIME is partially correct on #3, Rob MacFarlane. But incorrect on what Rob did, and it was not shooting skeet.
4. Of course it was RUMBLESEAT, as HARRIER answered correctly.
5. HARRIER also knew that COLORBLIND had the lavender, orange, and lime green hull.
6. No one has answered #6 correctly. It was not flaming torches, as Ray Jason carried those aboard AVENTURA, and practiced juggling in the cockpit on dark nights.
7. HARRIER was first to answer correctly that is was Greg Morris who coined the phrase the SHTP is "Like a bug light for weirdos with boats."

So the score at this point is HARRIER has 4 correct, RAGTIME has 1 correct plus the bonus, and no one has answered #3 or #6 correctly.

In the event of a tie, the tie-breaking trivia question is what SHTP Over-All Winner sailed with his Golden Labrador "Kruger" aboard?

By process of elimination, Rob must have radioed Venus. I can totally see him doing that.

I have seen photos of the doll on the backstay but they were not taken at close enough range to tell if she was anatomically-correct. So I'm stumped.

Hurray, RAGTIME has answered #2 correctly! It was Rob who radioed the planet Venus at ohdarkthirty, requesting it to please alter course and keep clear. As Venus was rising over BEETLE's stern, Rob mistook Venus for an approaching ship's forward range light thus fueling Rob's increasingly worried one way VHF "conversation."

Anyone gonna guess at #6?

Okay, I'll take another bite at #6 (by process of elimination we are down to a 50% chance): I have to go with the lawnmower since I have some vague recollection about a saddle and spurs being carried.

I recall a lawnmower. So can anyone confirm that the doll was anatomically-correct? See Sled, it's kinda awkward - I think we'll never know. Since we know there WAS a blow-up doll, let's eliminate the shotgun and call it good...

Missed a good one: Which SSS TranPac skipper carried a harpsichord and played it on his way to Hawaii?

Peter Strykers, 1984.

John: sorry, but a lawnmower was carried in the SHTP, lashed to the mast. The skipper was carrying on to the South Pacific and figured to make some $ mowing lawns.

#6 remains unanswered. (Ron, the skipper of the O-30 STILL CRAZY, confirmed his blow-up doll was anatomically correct. But by the time he reached Hanalei, it was leaking and had gone flat. Ron also famously finished the SHTP under spinnaker while swinging in his hammock on the foredeck of his O-30, steering with the autopilot remote.)

OK, is #6 a trick question? I recall hearing that somebody carried a saddle, but perhaps there were no spurs to go with it. Seems like every other possibility has been eliminated, unless the skeet shooter used something other than a shotgun.

Thank you all for playing along on SHTP Trivia. Hopefully we all learned something.

#6 was not a trick question. As near as can be determined, everything on the list was carried aboard at one time or another in the SHTP except a shotgun to shoot skeet while becalmed.
This has a basis in fact, as Kent M. did carry a shotgun on the Davidson 50 GREAT FUN in the Pacific Cup, and came on deck one morning while becalmed to shoot skeet from GREAT FUN's deck.

I did see the saddle and spurs on the O-30 STILL CRAZY while breakfasting aboard with Ron at Hanalei. Ron said he hoped to make a little extra money riding rodeos in the Islands. The next day Ron took off up Mt. Waialeale on a "vision quest." We were a bit worried until he showed back up aboard all muddy and bloody.

Ron was the quintessential Transpac singlehander. When the Hobie 33 SPACE COWBOY was abandoned mid-race, Ron went in chase, hoping to tow the Hobie 33 to Hanalei with his O-30. SPACE COWBOY never was located, and may still be circling the gyre of Pacific High.

For their correct answers, I'd like to invite Ken and BobJ to the Capitola Yacht Club for brandy eggnog aboard WILDFLOWER.

And if you can answer what SHTP Over-All Winner sailed with his Golden Labrador "Kruger" aboard and why, you too are invited.

Thanks for the invite, but won't be able to accept since I'm home in South Carolina. Some other time, perhaps. The trivia thing was fun, and I had trouble going to sleep last night thinking of more such questions. Like: Who were the honeymooners and what race did they do during their honeymoon? Hint: The male participant in the honeymoon finished first o/a. What well known No. Cal sailmaker acted as commo vessel during what SHTP? No hints. Who broadcast the eerie musical theme from a tv serial over his VHF before transmitting his position reports? Hint: Rod Serling tv program. This could go on and on....
Merry Christmas and Fair Winds to all.
Ken

Kruger was along with Mark Deppe on Alchera. At least part of him was posthumously in the 2002 race. Kruger apparently had a fear of boats and thus was never able to sail with Mark while among the living so Mark took him along for his successful SHTP adventure after Kruger had left this worldly realm. (Sheesh, Skip, some of these are really tough, but fun!)
