Nightmare's Saga

Credit for the welds is due to the welder at my friends machine shop.
I can weld, but that was done by someone who does it every day!

The vacuum bagging process is not difficult, lots of info on you tube and from the materials suppliers.
I used an old vacuum pump from an air conditioning service kit.
I wanted to use carbon fiber, but the cost is significantly more.
I also looked into doing a combination of glass and carbon fiber but it wasn't recommended due to their differing rigidity properties. Glass being much more flexible before reaching breaking strength.

The bracket is 14 lbs, the cassette 7lbs, and the foil is 20 lbs. not bad.
A couple more pounds for the tiller.
The plywood is glass reinforced and layered to the cassette body.
I plan to give it a sea trial soon. I may beef it up after that.

I'll bring it on Wednesday to the seminar.

While others were swapping SHTP plans and racing their e-rudders I was otherwise engaged.
Mother Nature dumped 18+ inches of fresh snow on my neighborhood. I am the snowplow guy for our private road and a couple other spots in town. Friday I started by 04:00 and Saturday by 06:00. Plow, take a nap, repeat. Good sleep deprivation training.

Pic from the highway Saturday afternoon.

Pic from this morning.
The eaves of the shop are 14 ft high.

I've been missing out on some sailing lately, but Nightmare is continuing to get ready for SHTP.
The repair on the bow has been stable so it got some gelcoat.
A fresh coat of bottom paint and a new through hull and speed transducer.
A new set of rudder bearings.

Replaced the backstay and upper diamond stays. Added a block for a backup main halyard.
Re wrapped the shrouds at the spreader tips to stop galvanic corrosion.
Here is my friend Doug helping to redo some rivets.

A bit of polishing and we are ready to go back in the water.

Some of the groceries arrived!
The freeze dried stuff anyway.
I agree with most, that the ones with meat are very high in sodium, and I don't think the meat is very tasty.
My selection is vegetarian and have tried most of them previously. I really like the Louisana red beans and rice.

While at the yard working on the boat, I found I could use the Jetboil to heat a can of beans, using it like a double boiler, and steam vegetables.

I'll have what you're having.
And details, please. I have no idea how to do anything with my beloved Jetboil except add-hot-water meals and coffee. I tried to make oatmeal once, and quickly learned that the Jetboil, true to its name, refuses to simmer.

I start with 1 to 2 inches of water in the cup and getting the water boiling, then working the burner down till it is barely lit.
It's a little easier with a partial can of fuel. Then I set in a can of beans or soup, eat drink or skim a little off the top so there is room to stir, let the water boil around it and stir.
Heats up pretty quickly.

For doing veggies I start with less water, get the burner low, put potatoes in first broccoli, peppers etc on top. 5-10 minutes till tender.

I like oatmeal too and find the muslix type to be heartier and easier. I just add hot water to it in a bowl and stir, let it sit a few minutes and enjoy.

For coffee I use a collapsible cone and paper filters for a pour through. The French press works good too. Although I've given up coffee and will have tea if I want a little caffeine.

The least amount of work cleaning the jetboil cup the better!

I've had my jetboil for 12 years so maybe it's settled in.

Excellent, thanks, Nightmare! I'm going to try that this weekend. Potatoes in a Jetboil...that's a feat.
Do you use it underway, and if so, do you have a gimbal mount?

Haven't tried it underway yet.
Yes, I have a gimbal strapped to the mast.
Gimbal is from new ocean wave. Pricey for what it is but works great.
I'll get some pics posted next week when I get back to the boat.

Last weekend found us in Prescott AZ for my nephew's graduation from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. He heads from there to Salem OR. for a job with Garmin in avionics. Sharp young man. Yes, I am a proud uncle :)

On our way home we made a couple stops. One to check out the London Bridge at Lake Havasu.
There is a distinct lack of masts in the area. Must not be very good sailing. Of course all the go-fast and patio boats may make it that way.
Used to be a pocket cruiser convention there, with trailer sailers from far and wide.

Found a neat spot to camp on the way home called Hole in the Wall. We will return with the fifth wheel to spend more time exploring.

Yep, unlimited data!

All the selfies you can handle:cool:

Unlimited says the sales (sails?) brochure. But very limited compared to modern expectations. In my experience, a 60 kilobyte grib file is a big one for the IridiumGo. Unless they've fixed it, it can't hand off from one satellite to another. If it starts downloading and the satellite disappears over the horizon (< 15 minutes) it just drops the file and you need to restart. If you start again immediately you are likely to get a full 10-15 minutes of download since another satellite comes up when the other goes down and it is in view for about 15 minutes.

I don't remember what my record download is but it is probably less than 100 kB. Shocking in this day and age.

On the first few days out, if you want an updated full grib view to Hawaii, it will necessarily be restricted to low resolution (maybe 2 degrees and 12 hour intervals).

If it starts downloading and the satellite disappears over the horizon (< 15 minutes) it just drops the file and you need to restart.
It's important to have a program like Xgate as your client for sat phone use. Request a GRIB and the connection is lost the file will continue when you reconnect. Still a pain but better than starting from scratch. You can get monthly or multiple month, yearly packages.

Just got the email set up.
For some reason yesterday I couldn't retrieve my email with the sat. phone number.
I'll try to download some gribs and upload a photo to see how it goes.
News to follow.

Here is the Jetboil in its gimbal mounted to the mast.
The mast seems to be the most efficient location, and the mount is a quick connect if I need to move it out of the way.
The cup locks in place so I can pour from the whole assembly. If my hand were to slip the system returns upright.
