Olson 25 for SHTP?

A couple of Olson 25s have done the SHTP, most recently Shark on Bluegrass in 2021. I'd talk to Falk Meissner, skipper of SOB.

Are you looking at Sea Brisket?

Roller furling for this boat for SHTP would be smart. Note the aft stanchions don't meet the required height, nor do the forward lifelines. Shipping back with Matson about $9,000 to be factored in. Good luck!

Looks like the forward lifelines would be easy to adjust. Curious how others have handled the aft stanchions as they are stock and Olson 29 has the same set up.

Shipping sound a bit crazy but I'm thinking about leaving the boat in Hawaii. I have family there.

I'm hoping Falk chimes into this thread at some point. I'm going to go see the boat tomorrow.

Though I hope SHARK On BLUEGRASS checks in with a report, my understanding was he was not a happy camper with the O-25 at the end of his SHTP. Hope I'm wrong, but I do note that SHARK is no longer on the PHRF rollcall. Have you considered a Wylie Hawkfarm? I know a good one available that has an excellent track record in races to Hawaii, including SHTP and Pac Cup. As well, it has an upgraded rudder, making losing steering control under spinny much less likely.

The advantage of a Hawkfarm over an O-25 is it's more competitive in a Transpac. This is because it can be sailed closer to optimum efficiency more of the time than a more squirrely O-25. As well, for the Hawaiian channels, it's more bombproof. I know, I built them. My own boat of 33 years was the Hawkfarm prototype. Together we won both the SHTP and PacCup overall. It steered so well I could never get the boat to broach, even with the pole on the headstay in 20 knots.

Would be happy to chat. I've been coaching Hawaii racers for some years.. PS, you can check out the shipping cost with Todd, who just shipped his O-29 home. You gotta add in the boatyard and land transport cost, Matson never gave him a quote, The shipping cost is based on the volume of the formula LxWxH, including the trailer height and length. For example if your O-25 overhangs the trailer by 5 feet aft and underhangs by3 feet forward, you will be charged for an overall length of 33 feet. Likewise, if the keel is a foot off the ground when on the trailer, the "H" is increased by a foot. No, the mast is usually not measured.

That local Hawkfarm to which you refer has a pretty cool pedigree, too. And it has a slip in South Beach Harbor, a difficult slip to obtain. 15 year waiting list, right next to the yacht club.

And yes, when Falk arrived in Hanalei Bay I wrote down his opinion of the Shark: "I'm so done with that boat. That boat can float off into the ocean and I wouldn't care."

Yikes, Maybe I should delay my visit this evening. I’m not familiar with the Hawkfarm. I was considering the Olson 25 for a couple of reasons. I want something trailerable due to My location in WA state and I used to own an Olson 29 that I regret selling.

While I'd love to see that Hawkfarm go to a good home and someone with SHTP aspirations, you will have to factor in getting it up to Washington, too. Again, I'd LOVE to see that Hawkfarm go to a good home and a bunch of them have done SHTP and Doublehanded Pac Cup.

There's a fleet of SC27's and Olson 30's in Honolulu, and think a few in Kaneohe and maybe even a couple in Lihue (on Kauai). That means if you get the boat over there and don't intend to keep it, there will probably be a market for it. Not so much with the Hawkfarm.

In Portland, "project boat" but cheap.

Hi Alan, Whichever boat I end up with I intended to buy a trailer. No plans on selling in Hawaii.

I looked at the Olson in Seattle. It’s a bit overpriced and has A rough paint job. The one in Portland needs mast step repairs. I’m not sure about the one in Tacoma. It was on eBay but shows sold now.

Good boats and as mentioned a couple have done the SHTP.... Tainted Love did it with us in 2000. A bit short for ocean surfing. Shipping was just under $9k for the Olson 29 and Express 27 this year. Also factor in the trip to Oahu, staying in Oahu, the yard and truck and logistics in Oahu and all the cost associated. I'd say factor in at least $10+ for the shipping. It was about $6k back in 2000 for a 30' boat.

Ballpark cost to replace standing rigging on the Hawkfarm? Who do you like for rigging services in the Bay area?
