Cal 2-27 Dura Mater
Last Saturday I motorsailed over to the Golden Gate Yacht Club. Bashy waves with big whitecaps in the slot: It was a miserable time.
But then I was there and I raised my RYC burgee, asked Bob the manager if I could tie up, wait for the Farallones racers to come in. "Sure," said Bob.
Walked over to the St Fancy, up to the race deck to find - only three people: Laura from YRA, Richard the pro and Gordie. Richard doesn't want to be plastered across social media so I've cut him out of the photo.
I recall a time when there were lots of people who waited for the Farallones finishers, but that's just me being sentimental, I suppose.
Personally? Given the forecast for the day I think whoever went out there solo was brave. Stalwart, even. And here are the photos, too.
Sam on Dragonsong, who was in the lead for a good while. entering the bay a whale greeted him, said:
"Hi, Sam! Nice job out there!"
Dragonsong headed for home
Then came Chad on Akyaa
Then Jib Martens' Freedom
Then came Chris Case on FUGU
Here is Greg on Akumu
and crossing the finish line
After Greg things went a bit dark. I don't have a telephoto lens, didn't have a flash to light up the bay. Did the best I could.

Nope, never was in the lead. That was AIS signals dropping out while mine apparently did not. Got flattened after crossing under the bridge, hence the bald-headed finish. Kevin on Werewolf was awesome fast, as usual. I never caught him after the start, and he was first boat around the island. I believe the order after him was Envolee, then Eight ball. I was way behind.

Then Daniel's Galaxsea: Sorry, Daniel, I didn't have a source of light for the bay. Thank you for shining a light on your sail. Some visitors came by around this time, asked: "Aren't they afraid out there?"
The response? "Nah. Not these sailors." Daniel knows the drill.
Here came Rainbow, sailing in close to the clubhouse where there is an outside light upon the water just below the race deck. Remember that next time you finish:
And finally, the first time Farallone Race for Paul Conroy aboard his C&C 32 Venture at 23.08:23. Congratulations, Paul!
Then it was a pleasant walk in the still windy conditions from the St Fancy to Dura Mater at the Golden Gate Yacht Club. I sure love sleeping aboard in a warm cabin when it's cold outside.
Woke up late Sunday to find it overcast and the wind was 17 knots just the other side of the seawall. Huh. That slot can be a snotty place. On the upside, it only took me 2 hours to sail home to Richmond.
