Sss history

"The Floating Harpsichord"
Very interesting, Alan. I've seen that book many times in used book stores, but I had no idea it was about the SHTP.
Barbara Euser edited a book of writings by a group of women on a canal trip in Europe, and it has a chapter or two in the beginning about the SHTP. I don't recall the title, but I have a copy.

Credit where it's due: In this context, the term "ipid" was coined by Rob Tryon. Rob has about the same compulsion to be teck-no-logically up-to-date as I do. (= Not much. Wanna see my flip phone that I never turn on?)

Since the iPad Mini was purchased for the R/C's use, I plan to hand it off to Paul or Allen. They are taking over the Race Chair job.

Mini's are a PITA. They're too twiddly and they don't go upwind. nyuck, nyuck.

Update: Norton Smith is able to correspond but might not be just wild about driving down here from Medford. However, he's going to be down here in April for some open water rowing races. Mike Pyzel...great guy, not terribly good at communicating.

Keep at it all, this thread is funny and wonderful to follow.

You have the perfect medium to "store" all the stuff you are collecting and talking about - make it digital and post onto your website!

I had a copy, wonderful stuff. Written by my stepdad's friend Dronkers' brother. I believe it went when. We left the house.

Jan gave me 5 file boxes full of "Old SSS Stuff" when we cleared out the storage unit. There is probably a lot of historical information in there but I haven't really looked. I need to get this to somebody that will make use of it. Jacky or Bob, do you have room for a stack of file boxes. I was cleaning out the garage recently and thinking about what to do with them.

Matt

Hi, Matt. Finally, all these years later, my history degree from Cal unleashes its latent potential. I'll take the boxes.

It's been days and no response from Mike Pyzel. I think we can leave him out of the equation. It would be nice to have as many as possible at the video'ing so let me keep looking.

The copy of The Floating Harpsichord that I ordered is here. I'll bring it to a SHTP seminar and hand it off.

Paul Kamen has some photos from the 1977 (first) Singlehanded Farallones, including one of Merlin sailing under the GG Bridge. I'll post them when he has a chance to scan them.

Matt Beall gave me three large containers of SSS materials that had been in a storage unit for years. He was so happy to get them out of his garage. Lots of Transpac seminar stuff which I will copy and upload to the appropriate section. Materials go back to 1990, but not earlier. It would be great to have access to earlier stuff. If anyone has something, I'd love to have a look. By the way, those slides Paul Kamen brought to the Sails and Rigging Seminar last night were great, taken by him while singlehanding his own Santana and by someone from shore and then from above, on the Golden Gate Bridge. That was 1977, and he didn't have a waterproof Go-Pro, so the clarity (and scarity!!!) of the shots in the waves were very impressive. What I should have asked: what were the conditions that day? and, what kind of a camera did you use? Paul said he himself hadn't looked at those slides for 35 years. They were terrific, and included an overhead of Bill Lee singlehanding Merlin in its first race. Paul said he will get around to posting them here eventually. Thank you again for sharing those, Max Ebb!

If you see any good early shots of the SHTP let's put some of them into the photo scroll on the front page of the web site. Just send me the pics.

I've found Kent Rupp...he's an artist, lives in San Francisco. I PM'd him on the message doohickey on his website.

Norton Smith should be down in the SF Bay Area in April, can we plan for a get-together and videotape, then?

I can't find Jim Gannon....

Name the place, Mr Hebert. I've started carrying my tape recorder in the trunk of my car, Miss Lucy, awaiting an unsuspecting Paul Kamen whose boat is down the dock from mine, Skip Allen, who comes by the harbourmaster's office to chat up Cheryl, and anyone else who gets caught in my magic history trap.

I've finally heard back from Kent Rupp...he's "in". Next, I will find out exactly when Norton Smith will be down here and we shall proceed with scheduling.

Hi Kids,

I took a large number of old seminar notes, and some copies of "The Singlehander", scanned them, and they are posted to our website, under the "Resources" tab, and many of the same links on the SHTP site under "Seminars".

Cheers

D.

I have a few other "Singlehanders" and some other things that I'll bring along - possibly to the 3-Bridge Trophy meeting. Pat B.

Of course physical memorabilia is great fun. What is missing? Information about the club from the 1980s through 1986!! Aside from race results, there are no notes online or in any of the big fat notebooks that I have inherited. Did the SSS exist during the years of the Bee Gees? Did sailors stop single-handing? In other words, did the world really stop? Wassup with those years?

Jackie, I think you mean "through 1996." There are several reasons for the lack of information. First, it was a non-computer/Internet/email world, pretty much. Kinkos was a hotbed of copying the day after a race so the results could be mailed out. Second, different computer systems had a difficult time talking to one another, so often information was lost because it couldn't be "translated." No one thought to save file folders stuffed with lots of paper. The first SSS laptop was a momentous purchase. The first printer was a portable job that you had to feed paper into one sheet at a time and it took a minute to print. Once the Internet began to work, issues over who had passwords, access, etc. arose. Let's get together and have a chat. -- Pat
