2016 Three-Bridge Fiasco Buzz

Thanks for posting, Black Jack. Based on the boats I see in your video, this was exactly my race, too. I was able to catch up to the light boats when there was wind, but was dead in the water with anything less than 5 knots. If it weren't for the doldrums around Red Rock, I might have done OK. My only strategy was to not sit becalmed for more than an hour. Nevertheless, it certainly was a GREAT day for a nice sail around the bay. After no wind and rain this past week, conditions could not have been better for this time of year. It was also great to see everyone on the water! As I was relaxing at Treasure Island, the fireworks display for the Super Bowl capped off a perfect day :)

Thanks to Allen and the 3-Bridge Race Committee for putting on a great day of sailing! I'm feeling happy to have finished for a change! Some wind, no wind, plenty of wind. Some slack, some current. Some race.

Thanks to those who helped "buzzz" us to the start line yesterday. - Pat

Ditto what Pat said!! Two friends of mine (Spencer and Lisa) also came out to help on race deck, just two people who enjoy sailing though Spencer used to race his boat on the bay before he sold it. People who volunteer for stuff like this deserve the biggest awards at the end of the year!

What a fun day!

A little bit of everything.

Kudos to the race committee, they were very busy!

Here are a few pics I got when I wasn't too busy.IMG_1419.jpgIMG_1423.jpgIMG_1439.jpg

CW went well, and was able to keep moving through Racoon strait fine.
I was over early, so 20 min penalty, I think.
I tried rounding Red Rock CCW, not fast, because the wind shadow was also foul current.
First time I finished singlehanded, so that was nice.

Picture of GPS track for race is incomplete, because I was using wrong setting on GPS and it dropped off the first portion of the race, maximum 9999 data points recorded on track, and then the first ones start dropping off.

Wow - great photos Greg! I should have tried to take some of you with my crummy camera phone. Greg and I both went South of Angel Island and ended up side-by-side for a long ways sailing up towards Red Rock.

Todd and I were close for awhile coming back down towards TI. He was a bit farther west and caught the breeze first when the westerly filled in. I never could catch him after that. That genoa I'm flying in Greg's photo became the reason I couldn't catch Todd when the breeze cranked up.

Kynntana looking good, and is that CREW on Dura Mater? Whodathunkit? I'll take this opportunity to say I'm GRATEFUL for my SSS friends mentioned, and many others!

Thanks, Greg, nice pictures! I started taking a couple after seeing you taking them, but then got distracted again when the wind finally picked up. This is the only halfway decent one. By the way, am I the only one who has been obsessively checking every hour today to see if race results have been posted yet? Anyone know what's up? Frolic at TBF_1-30-16.jpg

Are you one of those results-driven types? (Yes, I keep checking too.)

I think that's how Ray builds up Jibeset's hit count: "No, no, let's wait 'til I get 10,000 hits. Okay, NOW you can post the results."

Well, he must have gotten 1000 hits from me alone....AND NO, I AM CERTAINLY NOT RESULTS DRIVEN!!!!! I'm a tad competitive. In a cruising boat. Perhaps with a touch of obsessive compulsiveness.

The race committee is responsible for posting race results. Ray was on the course. Early this morning he was already informing me that Crews Nest had beaten Itinerant by 11 minutes and Dura Mater by 18.

Grateful to the race committee for another year of managed (barely) mayhem: Yes I am, very!
Grateful for a fantastic day racing on San Francisco Bay in January while boats on the East Coast are out of the water and shrink wrapped in plastic: Guilty but unrepentant!
Grinning all day Sunday thinking about what a good day Saturday was?: Guilty, unrepentant.
Obsessively checking Jibset for the results of the race?: Guilty as charged, somewhat repentant.
Count of muscles made sore by getting the #1 off the deck, and the #3 flying to keep Tom on Rock On! from passing (And failing): All, every one!

Thanks to Black Jack for some great footage of shorthanded sailors in their natural environment! You provided my first view of FUGU sailing from outside the boat, thanks! (Racoon Straights, sail #67967).

Just the facts: CW, Racoon Straights, around Red Rock before the black hole formed (Did anybody think to call Steven Hawking?), too far east when the westerly filled in. No relief from the tide, that I found on the city front .

Well done Chris and Fugu! I thought just maybe I got second in class after Jim Q, but then I recalled that I didn't see you after you passed at Blackaller.

Many thanks to the race committee. The radio work from Kristen, Allen and other voices that I didn't recognize was particularly efficient and professional.

It was especially thoughtful of the RC to shut down the wind for an hour so that we could enjoy a stressfree lunch break.

Good on Kynntana, very nice showing!

The Olson 34 fleet, not so much!

Ham and cheese.

It wasn't stress-free though since I set the reaching kite and went inside everybody around Red Rock. I could have touched the rocks sticking out on the NW corner. No guts, no glory . . .
