Around the World from West coast?

What about this 50 footer that rates 96 PHRF? I've seen this sitting up in Napa on the hard for years....it definitely needs work....but could be an interesting platform once all is sorted out and set up for extended short handed sailing. The current neglectful owner is out of their mind asking $35K....but if you scooped it up for $1 and applied the rest of budget toward refit....it could be a unique boat for your project. Anyone here know the history on this boat before it was mothballed up in Napa?

I believe the goal is to break the existing RTW <40ft record, not just set a benchmark from SF-SF. Of course completing the course an any pace would set a benchmark. The record I believe is held by a Class 40 and another Class 40 just retired from attempting to break the record. I've been scanning available yachts since he briefed me on the requirements..... the hunt continues.

I'm not sure what the context was. Was he considering taking a Pretorien 35 in the BOC or going cruising? I think that boat is in Santa Cruz.

If we talk about WSSRC sanctioned records the round the world singlehanded record is agnostic of the port of departure. See rules at their web site. After talking to a few meteorologists there is no chance of breaking the record going East from San Francisco. Crawling back through the Pacific would just take too long. In fact Guo's record is going to be hard to beat; mainly because his course was probably the shortest possible. And he did manage to score 240 miles days. Unsuccessful eastward attempts are piling up. I think that this is mostly because these are mostly non sponsored, limited budget attempts (oh, wait ...). That's why I'm going West, not East.

Anyways, I think that we need to remind ourselves of who I am: a lucky bastard who got a few trophies in 2018, but really has very limited experience in offshore sailing, boat preparation, repairs at sea, is boat-less, has not much money in the bank, and no support team. All the talk of records seem fairly premature. I would say there's about a 10% chance that I will leave, and maybe 2.5% that I will succeed at this time. A record? If I have $5,000 left in the bank and none else beat me at this game, then sure let's give it a try. But how long would it last? Records are made to be broken. Setting a 200 days record is just asking for someone else to come along with 100k more and a Class40 boat, right?

FYI ... Because of the categories and divisions, and according to the list of records on their web site, there seems to be plenty of records to set from our West Coast ... There are only 3 records on their web page for the 40 feet and under division, across all courses. Example: I don't see a record for the singlehanded monohull category, 40 feet and under division, Los Angeles to honolulu course. I know of plenty of skippers/boat owners here who could set/own that record ... How about Honolulu to Yokohama after that, and then Yokohama to San Francisco on the return leg? 3 records with what would really be one preparation! Any good old cruising boat will do since you're setting the record!
 
OMG I got a chance to sail Hot Socks a couple of years ago. WHAT a sweet sail!

There are more than a few RC2s for sale, most in the 150-250k range. There are more than a few Class 40s in the 100-150k range. Also the problem of they are mostly located in Europe or the Caribbean.

I know it won't be a popular thing to say with everyone but I know many others are on the same page. Corporate sponsorship is one thing to go after but it gets awkward for me at this point as I'm not a big fan of asking others people to pay for their sailing adventures. Asking for help, advice and information is one thing but I don't want to see the SSS forum / meetings (although it's been done.... even by non-SSS members) be a place to pitch for funds.

To be fair, I've not asked anyone to do anything but check out the little website I put together. I only provided an update on progress, which included the GFM campaign. For the most part I stood up the GFM campaign at my wife's request.

The website is not getting much traffic and only one person subscribed to the blog; it's obvious this is not getting very far in terms of socializing ...

I will say that in a sense now is the most interesting part of this project; will it take off? It's like watching a seed that fell down; will it sprout?
 
I hope I didn't come across to harsh. Still interested in your progress on the project just very protective of the primarily corinthian legacy of the SSS.
