New Boat 4 Sled

From Jake Beattie, founder, creative genius, and head honcho of the Race2Alaska, comes the following report of the first leg, "the Proving Ground," Port Townsend to Victoria.

In the beginning there was darkness. Across the internet and Port Townsend, the slumbering heads of R2AK teams and fans alike ‘celebrated’ the annual hitting of the 3:45, 3:53, 4:01 am snooze bar before excitement got the better of their better instincts, and peeled their human forms from grumpy horizontal to whatever excited orientation would get them to the starting line by 5 am. The merciful gods who owned the closest coffee shop opened at 4:00, eyes opened at 4:05. Let there be light, let there be dark roast.

For at least some of the teams, the alarm was as much a wake up call as it was the dit-dit-dit permission slip to end the restless, eyes-clenched near-sleep. If you’ve ever spent a windy night in a marina, you know the high wind howl that sent racers snugging deeper into their sleeping bags, turned rigging into anxiety whistles, and vibrated loose halyards into clanging mallets, aluminum masts into the instruments of coded percussion that banged out something close to a ball peen on bed pan reminder that leaving in the morning was a bad idea.

Don’t go to sleep, keep thinking about it. Lay in your bunk, close your eyes and let your exhausted and twitchy mind hear the all-night halyard to mast clang-fest and try to convince yourself that the wind probably isn’t as bad as it sounds (PS: It is). Layer that with your anxiety about big water, your boat, and all of the unchecked boxes after at least a year of preparation. Your whistling rig and screeching fenders the audible reminder that there is a gale raging all the way to Victoria, and that the fatigue-driven half-sleep that none of your crew is getting will end sooner than the wind. Dit-dit-dit, peel eyes, hit snooze, repeat until coffee plus urgency overcomes sleep craving avoidance. This is the day.

Starting line stress and high wind reality led to at least one team downshifting into race mode hours before the no motors rule went into effect. To capitalize on the chance of getting their 15 tons and 112 years of wooden history towed out of the harbor, Team Ziska’s 52-feet left the dock hours before the start and spent the night standing watch and marking time in open water; ‘heaving to’ and sailing sideways slowly, and up and down across the swell-filled bay until dark turned into almost dawn. Why? Because 11 pm or 5 am, whenever the day functionally started; ready or not, R2AK.

No one knew about Team Ziska’s precursor overnight of uncomfortable sideways, and by the time the starting horn blew with R2AK precision at 0500-ish, 1,500 fans lined the shore to join the internet masses as a single excited, vicarious, and sleep-deprived community to cheer the 50 teams across the line. The R2AK’s internet diaspora went insane, local schools offered extra credit for student attendance, a brass band played unexpectedly, a recording of the Red Army Choir elbowed for room at the mark and blasted the Soviet National Anthem for the fifth time in as many years. Crowds thronged, the wind puffed up, teams accelerated and within minutes rounded Point Wilson to collide into the leftovers of the overnight gale and the rising freight train of an opposing tide that turned the slurry of racer confidence, skill, calamity, anxiety, into the sum total of the years/weeks/longest sleepless night spent getting ready for right now. To the shore-bound masses and the hundreds of racers finally headed towards Alaska, it was a moment of excited relief that brushed the underside of a puckered halleluiah.

For some it was the best kind of short lived. A sleek fleet and no joke wind made for one of the fastest Stage Ones in R2AK’s short history. Team Pear Shaped Racing’s Kiwi imported trimaran took Stage One’s symbolic honors at a blistering pace of 3 hours and 52 minutes, two minutes shy of Team MAD Dog’s time in 2016—a pace that proved to be the overture to their record setting pace in Stage Two of 3 days and 20 hours to Ketchikan. Stage One times don’t matter for those who leave Ketchikan with more than memories, but acing the Pass/Fail portion does fan the flames of speculation: is this the year the record falls?

On Team Pear Shaped’s heels was Team PT Watercraft’s time-lapsed photo finish; Russell Brown and company’s finished in the exact same time as their 2018 Stage One finish. Team by team rang the bell at the dockside finish line until the Empress Hotel opened for high tea and the rising wind and tide closed off the harbor for the smaller and slower. One team reported they were 200 meters from the breakwater before being swept away by tide and howling westerlies into another 12 hours of waiting and clawing for progress. By 1 pm the fleet had divided itself into roughly thirds: the fast who made it into Inner Harbor’s glory, the almost fast who made it to the maple-scented side of the border but were forced into whatever pocket of refuge they could find until wind and tide throttled back to a tolerable misery right around sunset. The trail team of Group B: Team Ziska’s sightseeing tour up Haro Strait clambered back south and lumbered their wood to the dock shortly after 11 pm and rang the bell—ending roughly 24 hours underway. The third fleet was comprised of the prudent and tiny who looked at the forecast and thought their odds were better waiting until Tuesday.

The outlier was Team Old Fart in a Windstorm who lived up to his chosen and cringe-worthy name by solo sailing his home-built trimaran into the jaws of the afternoon’s peak wind and waves. Twenty miles from shore and in the middle of the shipping lanes, winds gusting to 35, waves topping 6 feet, it was a stress test on the newly cobbled boat’s 2×4 technology, the resolve of US Coast Guard, and stress of family members watching from the sidelines. It ended on the happy side of fate’s coin flip: at time of writing Team Old Fart in a Windstorm was safely anchored off of Chatham Island, seemingly waiting for the wind to pass before pushing out and plopping into the waters that swirl around Victoria’s final approach.

Day 1’s weather favored the sailors, and the underdog heroes in the human-powered side of the race opted for the better part of valor and hugged the shore on the southern side. Between Port Townsend and Dungeness Spit, 15 teams whose vessels fall somewhere between paddleboard and trimaran placed their small stack of chips onto ‘delay’ and gambled on a calmer future opportunity rather than the short term certainty of sailing, paddling, and/or rowing across the 40 miles of wind-whipped horrible that lies between them and the finish line. 24 hours into the 36-hour time window and R2AK’s plucky small boat navy is somewhere between 0 and 50% of the way to completing Stage 1 without a forecast of a clear weather window before the 5pm cutoff. If our 4 am inbox is any indication, Day 2 looks to be filled the questions of “Will they make it?” and “Is it fair?”

“Will they make it?”

No, at least not all of them. At 0430 Team Extremely Insain is heading his SUP for the barn. Wrong board, wrong year, and who knows what else, but after a night weathered in on Protection Island, Alex de Sain made the choice to fight another day. Weather is what it is, and whether we like it or not, teams limit their abilities to overcome when they choose their boat. The Strait of Juan de Fuca raged ugly all night, and other than a predicted bit of slightly less ugly mid-morning, the leftover slop of two solid days of hammer-down wind will make conditions uncomfortable to dangerous all the way across. The smart move for most boats would be to stay put. But R2AK teams make choices that are less than #clearlygifted, and in the history of everything, no one’s ever rowed to Alaska out of prudence.

“Is it fair?”

No and yes with equal fervor; we’re coming down fair and balanced on both sides of this Socratic ruse. Race or not, rowboats and kayaks go to Alaska every year, and a SUP has done it at least once. History and instinct tell us that it’s possible and safely done by waiting for the right weather, even if it takes some weeks pinned in by storms. Is it fair that the R2AK only offers a random 36 hours regardless of weather? Is it fair that racers are allowed to take something to Alaska that sparks constant debate on whether it’s a boat or a surfboard? The weather is cruel, the rules are clear, and fairness has got nothing to do with it.

As the sun rises on the second day of R2AK 2019, fifteen teams will weigh the volume of the ticking clock against the howl of the wind and the height of the waves. There will be elation, disappointment, and the lasting effects of racer decisions. The tension is intoxicating—we can’t turn away!

David (no_ballast) here is your choice of rewards for the correct answer. Obviously, accommodations and meals in Bodfish are included as well as the tour of Bodfish Boatworks. The choices are a expense paid tour of Silver City Ghost Town, or fly fishing in the Sierra's (all gear provided except the license). Other diversions that you may want to consider is whitewater kayaking, but I have no skills to lead you. Flat water kayaking is also available.

As for AlanH, I heard a second, incomplete version of the Mair 28 was in a mold, but never finished.

Two sheets of the study plans have been uploaded to a user album, maybe I can transfer the photos to this post.

Here's a challenge for any rules experts or someone who wants to chime in.
Both these boats are racing in the R2AK .... If it matters, the rowing boat, Team BACKWARDS AF, is on course to the next mark (and leading the race) while the tri, Team NARWHAL, is sailing at nearly 90 degrees to course.

Assuming they are operating under COLREGS and not the RRS, neither technically has "Right of Way".
right of way does not exist in COLREGS world.
But I digress...

the Trimaran is the giveway vessel under rule 15 - Crossing Situation - vessel with the other vessel on her starboard side must keep clear and avoid crossing in front (well, SOP should be to alter to starboard anyhow).
BUT Rule 15 applies to powerdriven vessels... so we go to rule 18 - Responsibilities Between Vessels - which says (in part) that a sailing vessel must give way to: 1. a vessel not under command 2. a vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver 3. a vessel engaged in fishing
I would say the answer remains the same under Rule 18, as I assume the dory is restricted in her ability to maneuver (or at least more that the trimaran)

OR - since the Tri is "overtaking" the dory, they also must keep clear. (Rule 13). Rule 13 supersedes 18 if you get right down to it.

Nice analysis, DaveH. I'm having difficulty imagining the dory is less maneuverable than the tri (it even has brakes if those oars are used in that fashion) so I have to go with rule 13, overtaking. You gotta love the R2AK; where else could you possibly get a picture like that where such disparate types of vessels are competing against each other?

The R2AK prides itself on having a minimal number of rules. The R2AK Instructions do mention adhering to USCG Rules of the Road (and not the RRS.)

I assume the vessels in the photo are on Inland Waters. But that does not apply in this situation.

At first glance, a danger of collision certainly exists, and has existed for some time, even if having gone unnoticed.

The rowing vessel is absolutely restricted in her ability to maneuver. She has no rudder, is traveling downwind, and would have trouble turning or reducing speed. On closer examination, the trimaran is also restricted in her maneuverability. Other than the helmsman, there is no crew on deck, and the trimaran is traveling at least 2x the speed of the rowboat.

Both vessels are obligated to avoid collision. I agree with David that the trimaran is more maneuverable...and the majority of onus of avoidance falls on him. Meanwhile, the rowers are seemingly nonchalant and not even looking at the situation that is rapidly approaching.

I also agree with DH on his observation that though it is unclear if the trimaran is also overtaking vessel, she certainly could meet that definition: approaching from "22.5 degrees abaft the beam" and obligated to stay clear. (Rule 13 (b).

The Rules of the Road are confoundingly vague and contradictory when it comes to human powered craft, wind and kite surfers, rubber duckies, and a plethora of other craft.... this is not a bad thing. My belief is that the powers of observation, anticipation, courtesy, and common sense need to be involved as much as Rules of the Road.

I would be curious what ultimately happened in this R2AK crossing situation.. The rowing boat should be giving 5 or more blasts on an air horn or whistle. And the trimaran helmsman should be in the act of altering course.
 
I always took "restricted in ability to maneuver" to mean something like a dredge and its tug in the Santa Cruz harbor, or a vessel engaged in salvaging Cal 2-29s off Capitola beaches.
The tri and rowboat here are both highly maneuverable, if not comparably or easily - those rowers could do 360's while slaloming toward any direction, given enough muscle and adrenaline! -- and with plenty of sea room, it appears.
Rule 3(g) says "...from the nature of her work...". Neither of these boats are engaged in commercial/work activity; they just really like steak knives, maybe?
Another vote for Rule 13.
If both rowers are dead tired, and the conditions indeed render all rowing efforts futile, does it then become a 3(f), not under command (and then definitely the stand-on per Rule 18)?
 
On the issue of right-of-way (and I agree with David about the term), no one has mentioned the “tonnage rule.” Is that under the category of common sense?

re RAM - Lanikai is correct; I am applying a colloquialism to something that actually has a precise definition under the COLREGS; at the very least Restricted Ability to Maneuver is supposed to be declared by the vessel, and the appropriate day shapes/ lights displayed. Same thing for Not Under Command.
So yes, it looks like Rule 13; although in the order of priorities under rule 18 Overtaken is at the very top and Overtaking at the bottom, so it's kinda both 13 & 18; if we assume the trimaran is overtaking.

for bonus points:
what shape(s) should be flying from the dory's flagstaff if they were declaring Restricted Ability to Maneuver?
if they were so tired that they were Not Under Command?
and what should the sound signal from the Trimiran be if they are intending to pass astern of the dory?

not that any of the above takes precedence over "the powers of observation, anticipation, courtesy, and common sense" + the obligation for both vessels to avoid collision.

and no, the irony of a rules question regarding a race who's attitude is rooted in "we dont need no stinkin rules" is not lost on me!

Sad news last evening from Nance and Commodore Tompkins. WANDER BIRD, aka ELBE No.5, a 136 year old, historical National Treasure to Germany and to the World, was rammed abeam the foremast and sunk by Cypriot flagged containership ASTROSPRINTER in narrow confines of the Elbe River, 18 miles downstream from Hamburg.

There were approximately 43 people aboard the Hamburg Maritime Foundation owned WANDER BIRD, fortunately only one serious injury. Though WANDER BIRD stayed afloat long enough to be towed to shore, she ultimately filled and rests on the bottom in about 14 feet of water.

Visibility was good, and WANDER BIRD had sails aloft.

WANDER BIRD, originally engineless, carries two engines and a large propeller on either side of a small rudder, We do not know if the engines were engaged. The 'BIRD would not have been “nimble”, but it appears a prudent master would have maneuvered to keep WANDERBIRD out of the way of the overtaking and oncoming ship.

WANDER BIRD is the brown track on the below AIS chart, and ASTROSPRINTER the green. At the approx. location of collision, ASTROSPRINTER would have been obligated to be turning 30 degrees to starboard to stay in the navigable channel.

WANDER BIRD had returned to Germany only a week earlier from an extensive $1.7 million refit in Denmark. We do not know the Elbe River pilotage rules, but do note the containership did not stop, but carried on to sea. Maybe she was under orders to do so from nearby Coast Guard vessels?

It was 91 degrees here at CBC yesterday, and every beach between Sausalito and Capitola was packed with crowds seeking relief on the hot sand. Umbrellas were the equipment of choice.
Could I politely suggest a "small token" for David? Tell us what and how you named your Mair 28? Also, your reefing technique for rounding Pt. Conception?

Sure. Another cup of Shut Up and Post has been poured.

I purchased the Mair 28 from Peter Klausen in 1987. It seems there also was an agreement to use the boat for 60 days to assess before buying. Peter named the boat after his daughter Katie - hence Katie K. Sheesh, that reminded me of a fishing boat. With the open transom and cockpit area that enlarged to the transom, it looked like a commodity scoop in the bulk foods part of the market. SCOOP was the new name. (A friend had a C & C sailboat called Spook at the same time. Tongue twisting radio calls.)

The standard bow pulpit made it hard to lower the mast to reaching height even though Scoop sat low on the trailer with the daggerboard in the up position. The pulpit was modified to a U-shaped section and the mast could lower to horizontal.

In August, 1990, it was time to sail to Southern CA after I took a job there. With a crew of 4, we were looking for a nice sleigh ride south - but little or no wind. We stopped at Morro Bay to get more gas and additional gas tanks.

Off again and the wind finally started to pick up around Pt Conception. Up goes the spinnaker and the surfing begins.

Suddenly, the mast section fails due a stress fracture at the exit block for the topping lift. As the spinnaker is holding the mast up, the mast acts as though there is a hinge at the break. Damn, the mast 'reefed' itself and gently landed on the deck, and sitting snugly in the U of the bow pulpit.

It took us no more than 5 minutes to pull in the loose lines, start the outboard, and continue to Santa Barbara.

Thankfully, the premium was paid for the trip insurance that covered us from SF to LA.

It's a far cry from getting out and seeing it with your own eyes, but the science is solid and important... and I find it intriguing that an autonomous unmanned wind powered craft has now made it 1/2 way round a continent. DH

Update on Saildrones in the Southern Ocean: 1020 is now almost 3/4 of the way clockwise around Antarctica before returning to its starting point of Bluff,at the southern tip of the South Island of New Zealand. So far, the highest wave reportedly recorded by 1020 has been 29 feet in 30 to 40 knots of wind near the Drake Passage and Cape Horn.

Saildrones 1022 and 1023 are in a match race, half way from NZ to Cape Horn. Reportedly, "1022 set a speed record of 22.6 knots," and "1023 went 24.4 knots," breaking the old record of 14.87 knots set by 1020.

The technology to measure wave height and speed of the three Saildrones is not well explained, illustrated, or documented on the website, other than to say GPS and inertial guidance sensors are used. There is one 4 month old graph of 1020's measured boat and wind speeds. These 23 footers are not planing hulls, nor are the wing sails reefable.

It would be interesting to know if those top speeds were set on a semi-horizontal sea, or, more likely, falling off the cliff of a giant breaking wave. Here's 1020 taking a selfie of itself in a 60 knot storm:

Saildrones have to be mighty tough to survive in the Southern Ocean in winter. 1020 has already rebounded off an iceberg. Exciting stuff.

This fine Matthew Turner built schooner was launched in San Francisco and held the race record from Los Angeles to Honolulu for 17 years. In a month, 100 racing yachts will be following in her wake on the 50th Anniversary of the running of the Honolulu Race, later dubbed the "Transpac."

What does this schooner share in common with the below vessel being launched Sunday in San Diego?
