New Boat 4 Sled

Happy News from CBC. Marianne's Ice Cream, manufacturer of Macapuno Ice Cream you are familiar with is now offering Otter841 ice cream honoring our local surfing otter. The ingredients are cinammon caramel ice cream laced with snickerdoodle chunks. Marianne's staff says their "new icecream flavor, like Otter 841, is cute, sweet, and local, but with a bit of bite." I'm not making this up. I can even get you the T-shirt..

As a long time Cal 20 lover, am entertained by the fact that in the SSS race up the coast, the modern communication tech failed but the Cal 20 brought a beaten, and cold sailer, home safely.
In my opinion the Cal 20 was on the leading edge of the ULDB revolution, those 20s would surf in the same conditions as a Cal 40 and for me the 20s were just as. if not more, exciting!

Tragedy on Maui. All of historic Lahaina Town has burned. Front Street, Lahaina Yacht Club, Pioneer Inn, the Banyan Tree, the Harbor and all boats that didn't get out, gone. Geoff Bourne's J-105 NOA gone....Geeez.

Just awful. So many livelihoods taken away in the blink of an eye, plus the property damage. My old Troubadour (J/33) was docked there.
 
I stood under that tree in 1964 at nine years old. Haven't been back to Maui since.
After reading "The Overstory" and The Secret Life of Trees", I'm not counting that Banyan out yet.

Such a weird confluence of weather to create such almost instantaneous devastation! It is truly hard to imagine what those poor people are going through right now.

Sleddog with 3 of the best women 110 sailors at Inverness (L-R) Milly, Anna-Pia, and Annie Lewis. Annie Lewis, Michael Spoerer, and I were tied after the first two races of the PCC's on Saturday, each with 4 points.

Sunday, in 10-16 knots, Spoerer won the 3rd race. We won the 4th race, setting up a tie on points going into the 5th and final race, held in W to NW 12, gusting 17 knots.

Bryan and I on SMART SHOES were able to get Michael "in jail" 3 minutes before the start and he never recovered back into contention. We won the last race and the PCC's. Michael 2nd overall, Milly and Anna-Pia 3rd, one point ahead of Annie Lewis and freshman crew Tom Burden.

Fun sailing on Tomales Bay in perfect conditions, warm water (75) and air, and sterling RC management headed by Skip Shapiro's team. A surprise spectator was Jackie on DURA MATER,, who anchored DM off IYC Saturday for the food and festivities. Jackie made a gracious speech with presentation of Pineapple Cake from SSS Commodore Chris honoring Milly and her hardworking committee last weekend finishing, then restarting the Drake's Bay racers. Caps off to them and SSS.

Thanks so much Skip ! And SO much thanks for your HUGE tips on my sail trim ! It made all the difference on Sunday. What perfect conditions on our beautiful Bay. I echo your huge thanks to Skip Shapiro and Co for stellar RC work ! What a fun weekend !!!!
 
Question for SSS readers. For races starting off the City Front such as SHTP, Drakes Bay, 3 Bridge, Long Pac, HMB Race, etc. if you were going to spectate or volunteer, would you prefer the start/finish be at Golden Gate YC or St.Fancy. Or does it matter. And why?

FYI, there's a group of wingers (wing foil sailors) risking heavy fines from the CG for riding the bow wave of commercial shipping. The pilots, tug captains, and others are pretty pissed at their audacity. The wingers say it's a free ocean. A warning has been issued.

To spectate or volunteer: GGYC because of their welcoming attitude towards the SSS and great memories from working on their deck. I've been on StFYC's deck a lot less but when I was, I felt like we were an inconvenience. One StFYC Race Director even said so.

More important, for skippers: GGYC hands down. On a morning ebb with light wind (a common scenario) you have a better chance of clearing the restricted South Tower when starting at GGYC. Also when coming back in from the ocean to finish, you have more runway to get inshore and finish at GGYC's "X" than you do at StFYC's "A". The often hard, windy reach into the finish is a bit deeper and more manageable with the extra distance.
 
I agree with Bob. Everyone at the GGYC is always cordial and generous to sailors. Once, after Nathalie's ZYC race we had brunch. It was the best brunch I've ever attended. Of course, this was back awhile, but for $20/person? Yum Yum

I prefer GGYC for all the reasons already stated. I would even prefer working from the parking area in front of GGYC, like we did last year.

Agree with all comments. As for starts at St. Fancy, I was with you Bob (and maybe Sam) when you were PRO the time we got kicked out of StFYC. I’m pretty sure it was a Farallones race. In best SSS tradition, we decamped to the parking lot near the stone tower and proceeded to get the race going with “what we got.”

To paraphrase a famous line: “Race Deck? We don’t need no stinkin’ Race Deck!”

For a quart of Macapuno, what well known design or class is this cruiser/racer? The owner, sitting below, is in the midst of telling me: "Headroom is overrated. She's got standing headroom when heeled or standing in the companionway with the sliding hatch open. Even has a wood burning stove. Francis Herreshoff's drawings for the ROCINANTE include a profile drawing showing the occupant seated on the toilet forward of the mast with his head sticking out the foredeck hatch. And if that is not enough, the occupant is smoking a pipe, deep in thought."

Take as many guesses as you wish..

Hint: Owner of this boat, pictured, is a member of IYC. As well, IMHO, the boat is the prettiest and most photogenic on the West Coast. And that is saying a lot.
