New Boat 4 Tchoup

Yesterday, at the RYC small boat midwinters, Stephen and Greg launched Skoot/Scoot (I forget the spelling), and took their sweet time getting around the course.

With a rating of 100 they were in the same class as a Vanguard 15, RS Feva, a Melges M14 and David Hodges on his Pyramid Boat Works Wing Dinghy. Sorry I missed that one.

Corrected time for this HomeMade River of Grass? -4727673.00:00 Now THAT's 'dynamic scoring' for you!

Ashby Shoal

Let's RAID!

Save the date! Bring whatever ya got that floats!
Ashby Shoal Beach Bonfire.

LOW 1732. -1.6
The shoal forms less than a half mile from the Emeryville Marina kayak launch.

(weather dependent for Scoot)

The Snipe has a racing bottom (and no trailer) so I'm not a candidate for this one, but it sounds like a good time.

This seems a little thin, Bob. I'll bet a dollar to a dog turd you could beg, borrow or steal a boat, and have it back before anyone missed it. It won't be a long party.

Unfortunately, I will be out of the state, or I would inflatable or SUP to the shoal.

Google Maps shows the ramps are temporarily closed. IDK if Cliff still keeps Rainbow in Emeryville. If so, he may be able to inquire about their status:

I did a lot of wingfoiling from the Berkeley Marina docks this summer, it's a little less than a mile to the shoal from there. It is a worry at low tide for a foil! The dock is nice and there is an astroturf rigging area with fresh water hoses. There are bigger docks just up the cove with a hoist and everything but I don't know if they are public or Cal Sailing or what. The dock I used is pretty narrow (a laser dolly would never fit but an el toro carried by hand would). Sailflow tide info says the low tide is 6:13pm at Berkeley with sunset at 5:09?

The Emeryville boat ramp is public, open and free and has plenty of 24 hour parking.

The parking to the North, by the kayak launch, has a gate which closes at 10pm.

I still had the ST1000 from Tchoupitoulas (Santana22) and figured why not. Already had a Victron 24v to 12v in the system.
Even better is the string steering that runs around the perimeter of the cockpit. It's going to take some muscle memory but works a treat!

Although I'm less than concerned it's necessary, I had built a reinforced hole in the centerboard trunk, and a recessed socket in the centerboard to be able to pin the board in place.
Here's what I've come up with. A plastic 3/8" bolt would hopefully secure the board and it's 70 lbs of lead in a capsize, but shear off in the event of a high speed collision.IMG_4303.JPG

One more time to turn the boat over!

JF Bedard* told me about the time he capsized his RoG in the Everglades Challenge. He was downwind with the board up and may have snagged the mainsheet on something during a gybe. The boat laid on it's side, he had to swim around to release the centerboard and throw a retrieve line over. The boat came back up with no water down below.

There is video of the french boat doing capsize tests at the dock.

Scoot's turn.

Here is how to secure the centerboard in down position.

This is how to remember to pull the pin and not spend so much time clearing the pin end out of the farking centerboard!

The magnetic latches in the cockpit lockers are a gentle click at best. The Santana 22s had a simple system of a line led through the aft bulkhead and secured in the cabin which I copied.

This might be handy. It's a semi-drysuit. I think that means the gaskets are neoprene instead of latex. Costs a lot less than that Kokotat I once had.
