New Boat 4 Tchoup

I know everyone is just dying to see how the RoG build is going and there has been some progress in the shop.

But first, JF won his division in The Everglades Challenge this year.

Progress has been made in the RoG shop. I built the rudderhead. Started out with some off the shelf transom pintles from RigRite.pintles.jpg

Finding some stainless steel tube with the right ID turned out to be a challenge. I had to drill out some existing stock from McMaster. I sleeved them in fiberglass to separate the steel from the carbon. Richard made me some blocks out of Bubinga, a crazy-hard hardwood from Africa.IMG_1946.jpg

Layed up a mixture of 9IMG_1963-a.jpgIMG_1964-a.jpgoz uni and 5.8oz woven over a male mold, then glued the gudgeons/blocks in place, faired and layed up the straps.

I don't intend to clear coat it so there's some fairing here and there.IMG_1977-a.jpg

Getting it off the mold took some serious persuasion.

I had already made the tiller but realized I’d have to modify it to use the st1000 tiller pilot I have.

Just noticed this thread today. The work seems to be moving nicely. From the computer screen, there seems to be good attention to detail.

Going back to initials posts where small boat options were bantered about, here is one for the small, carry the boat enthusiast. My storage inventory includes a Folbot Big Glider with a sailing rig. It is in surprisingly good shape for the age. A modest price will make it yours. It is currently in Bodfish, but I will be making Bay Area trips in the future for possible delivery.

Sorry, if this hijacks the thread, but this post can be considered a small reward for those following the build.

Ants

There is a great article in the new Small Craft Advisory by Paul Kamen on his voyage from Richmond to Stockton on his son's El Toro.
Lot's of good ideas for how we could make a SF RAID.

No worries on the hijack Ants but how about a picture of your Glider?

Agree that threads are meant to be broken. Yes, Ants! We love looking at boats boats boats. And if there's some background we learn a little something about you, too: like whether you work in your driveway (like Alan) or in a meticulous workspace, like Stephen.

Here is a happy and quick correction, the Big Glider is not mine any more, but rather Sled's.

As for pictures, I am a few steps behind. Step 1 is to read the forum directions on photo posting. Then there is some inertia on my part to over come.

An El Toro through the delta with be a hoot. The Bodfish fleet still includes a couple of Sabots.

I have been retired since '04, and still can't find time for all the fun things to do. But, I keep trying.

Well Alan I guess we're going to have to organize it. I won't have a boat for a while so I'll drive the SSS Protector chase boat the first year.

We don't have a...?

Should we start a SF Bay RAID thread?

What have I been missing here? Who are we going to raid?

I'm not sure what it stands for, and I think it's roots are Northern European, but a RAID is a group cruise of small sail and oar boats. The Everglades Challenge and the Race to Alaska seem to be spawned from the idea. AlanH would know more.

I'm proposing a bunch of small boats put in at Horseshoe Cove under the Golden Gate Bridge and cruise (race?) in company to somewhere up the delta, anchoring, beach camping, marina camping, along the way.

Sounds fun right?

What's your small boat?

I've tried this before without a lot of traction but we could sure try again.
