SHTP 2016 interest thread

If things go as planned I will be in Rio watching my kid sail his Finn in circles next summer but.I am totally in for 2018 (that unfinished business that keeps cropping up). I see Barry Bristol often and he seems committed to this years race on Fastlane.

Congratulations, Margie. Contestants from SoCal are fairly rare. I did 2 SHTP's while my boat was based in MdR. Getting to the start line is usually the hardest part! Good luck...don't get discouraged.

Thank you so much! I appreciate you saying that! Im putting everything in place and preparing...I hope it all works as I plan :-)

I am doing my best to get the Prodigal Son ready to go, and to get me ready to go. I have said before that I dont know if the boat or I am up to the task, but hopefully will know by early Spring after extensive sea trials of us both. However I have been working on it since May of this year, and have certainly invested a lot of time and money in the effort, and I am reasonably optimistic that I can do it.
I will be flying in to attend the Power Management seminar on November 12th, as much to meet other folks who are planning on making the race as to learn about powering the boat up. I hope to see and meet a lot of you there.

OK, I've identified our support boat for finish.

We can fit a couple of containers full of dinghies and fuel jugs, and smaller boats can be brought back to SF as deck cargo.

I'm new to SSS. Had planned to do this I'm my Dana back in '06, but life happens. Was seriously thinking of doing it in the Corsair 28 I've had for a couple years now, but decided to go back to a monohull. Made an offer on a PS37. Hope to have it ready soon. soon. Look forward to meeting all of you on the water.
Cheers, Mike

A friend here in the Berkeley marina went from a Dana 24 to a Crealock 37. Trouble is, he spends all his time working on it, upgrading it and hanging out on it, but he rarely sails it. What's up with that?

I've been trying to get him to come out and race. He finds working on the boat to be more challengingly fun than puttering the bay around under sail. (Does that sound like some other people we might know....?)

Welcome Mike! Surely this won't happen to you. And all the best on your new boat :) If I could have figured out how to scuba dive off the PS37, they would have stayed at the top on my list when I was boat shopping.

No. Brian Cline still has Maris, his beautifully maintained and very much appreciated Dana 24.

Make no mistake, there will be plenty to do getting the boat ready, and any suggestions are appreciated. But from a sailing perspective, it will be much easier to manage than my trimaran which I've decided not to use.
Cheers, Mike⛵

I found a PS 31 I really liked and they accepted my offer. It will be surveyed next Thursday and hopefully all will be well. A little more performance and comfort than my Dana. Anyone installed their own Monitor?
Cheers, Mike

mikeacro,
Just curious as to why you would take a relatively slow (albeit very seaworthy) monohull over a fast trimaran. You indicated it would be easiier to manage. Is that in sailing it, or in getting it ready for the race?
As I said, its just curiosity, probably driven by the fact that I am very new to trimarans.
Jim

The Corsair 28 trimaran has been a great boat to sail for the past two years. For one thing, it is a much more physically demanding boat to sail. In larger seas, it is amazing fun, but a handful when solo, or crewed. The standard roller boom is difficult at best to reef by yourself in anything other than moderate conditions. Plus, it has no proper sea hood accessing the cabin, just the pop top. Not great for for offshore use. Last but not least, is at 60 years old, I just would like to have a little nicer level of comfort during the trip. Guess I'm going soft in my old age. May consider doing the 2 man in the trimaran the following year in the crewed transpac out of Long Beach. I'm sure at some point in the journey I'll long for those consistent double digit speeds though!
Cheers, Mike

Mike,
You certainly make a good point. I have an Allied XL2 laying around that would probably be a comfortable boat to do it in. Every now and then I have such yearnings for comfort and a nice interior. Maybe my wife would sail with me again if I did.

Hi everyone!
I am in for the 2016 SHTP, assuming that everything stays on track. Last February I upgraded from my old Ultimate 20 named Layla to a well-restored 1966 Cal 40 named Shaman. I bought my Cal for the specific purpose of doing this race! I just completed a qualifying sail between October 26 and 29, a couple of weeks ago. Here is the DeLorme inReach MapShare site of the trip: https://share.delorme.com/ThomasBurden

As an offshore racing newbie, I have a lot to learn, but have an excellent boat, and it looks like many experienced teachers in SSS. Thanks to Bob Johnston for the excellent electrical seminar last night.

Thanks Tom! Most of what I said about batteries came from the article you wrote.

Our web Kahuna will have the PowerPoint and Excel energy budget spreadsheet up shortly.

I finally took delivery of Watermark, a PS31! All the standing rigging and dodger should be complete next week, new main, and staysail should be done in about 4 weeks. Meanwhile, I'm installing electronics, and waiting on delivery of the monitor. Lots to do, but progressing well I think.
Cheers, Mike

Well I think I'm in after just navigating the Jibeset website. Can't resist the bug light any longer so Dolfin, my Pacific Seacraft 37 for thirty one years, and I look forward to joining the fleet next July. I agree with the General (and I hope he comes again) that the hardest part might be getting to the starting line as we live in San Diego. I'm a cruiser, not a racer, and have always had my wife on long passages so this is definitely a new experience. Dolfin and I cruised the South Pacific (and North Pacific) many years ago and Mexico more recently and we like it offshore, at least most of the time. I'm flying to Oakland tomorrow for the seminar and hope to meet some of you there.
