Take Alcatraz

I'm in if it's Sunday. Weather permitting...

Excellent! Sunday December 20. Imagine a start line between the Berkeley Pier and an imaginary perpendicular line over to the yellow BYC buoy as the pin. Start = 11 am with the buoy to port. Circle Alcatraz either way. No committee boat or kayak. No postponements. Any sail. Post your finish time here.

Oh so now it's getting all complicated. "Yesterday I couldn't even SPELL perpendicular and now I ARE one!"

Besides, I was hoping to pick my current. :)

I plan to be there tomorrow. Will monitor VHF 72, and I am shooting to start the course approx 11A. Todd

Excellent, Todd! See you out there @ 11 am. There's another J 92 in the Club, a blue hull, but her owner has already shuttered her against the winter cold (!!!!????).

Yeah, yeah - I'm still thinking about it . . .

Okay I thought about it (as I listen to the rain hitting the skylights). Have fun out there.

yes, indeedie it is raining. I hope Todd of Windtrip Infinity is not from Minnesota because he might just come out in this weather (south wind very cold) and call it pleasant. On the other hand if he sails around Alcatraz he'll gain the trophy. Scoreboard and all that. But I'm sitting inside DM's cabin w my Pelagic on the seat cushion next to me ... Listening to the rain and to the halyards clanking all around. Another day another sail.

And then, as I walked to my car, the sun came out. And I had set aside the day to sail. So DM and I struggled out of her upwind slip with the south wind shoving her sideways, and sailed around Alcatraz clockwise. Good wind all day. On the way home it started to drizzle. Then the fog settled in. Then it started to rain. The wind held. Time for the ski goggles. To give them credit, those wild and crazy sailing students from OCSC were out in force: five boats tacking, gybing, recovering little items from the water. Next Alcatraz Challenge will be determined by Tom Cavers, whose idea it was and who was out of town this weekend.

Bob Johnston, numbers man that he is, has agreed to figure out corrected times for this event. DM's elapsed time today was 2:15:21. Reefed. Course = 11.3 nm

DURA MATER has seriously upped the ante. That's a corrected time of 2:08:14 using the TOT formula in our SSI's.

With the southerly it was probably a reach out and a reach back, with a nice push from the ebb on the stronger side (since she went clockwise).

That will be hard to beat.

I got there a little before 11, could not find the BYC buoy, so I just started from near the Berkeley Breakwater. The depth sounder was showing less than the draft, and I cannot remember which, if any is the deeper entrance channel. I will try to calibrate the depth sounder. I started 10:54:17, finished 12:35:40, same as Jackie, clockwise, reefed jib and main. ET 1:41:23 I didn't really do the race, though, since I never found the BYC buoy. Will put the coordinates in GPS next time. It was raining much harder for the sail back to Alameda, upwind, and I was cold and wet, so I used the motor a lot to get back.

With its rating of 96 I get a corrected time of 1:53:00 for WINDTRIP INFINITY, and it looks like Todd sailed farther than the actual course. Nice job Todd!

This isn't even solo racing - it's like solo, solo racing.

Wow! Was that you flying east past Point Blunt w two silver sails? You were going fast! I thought, "who is dumb enough to be sailing out here today ( besides me)"? If we were both on the course then it was certainly a race and you won, honey! I got to the buoy @ 10:59 and had a mighty struggle w my sails before finally settling in after you. But I saw you over there near the pier - sailing fast, huh? That's great that you came out! Are you from Minnesota? Canada? Well done!

No, I'm from Southern California, San Pedro. I just have limited days to sail, so if I have the time set aside, I want to go, even if the weather is rainy. I motored and sailed over from Marina Village in Alameda, so not me by Pt Blunt. I tried calling you on 72 a few times.

Jackie is from Wisconsin. That's why she was sailing in a bikini and was still a little warm.

Good on ya two. I raise my (plastic) glass and toast your extreme saltiness from the comfort of my (nearly) dry boat.

Todd, there is a proud tradition attached to this eminent (pop-up) race. The photograph/trophy is bestowed upon the holder of record via a used but still vainglorious waxed bag from Trader Joe's. I can bring it to you when you are present or I can dump it in your cockpit or unlocked lazarette. As you choose. Please advise. Jackie s/v Dura Mater, eclipsed holder of record for the Take Alcatraz Challenge. The next challenge date is, of course, your choice, too.

Duh! I was trying to raise you on 78. Next time I'll write the # on my hand w waterproof marker.

OK, a bit off topic but I'm loath to start a new thread. I was reading recently that 9 is the "hail another boat" channel. What do people tend to use on the bay so they don't miss each other? I also note that Ch 13 is used elsewhere in the world for monitoring marine traffic, but in SF Bay, they use ch 14. Why...?

I will pick this up next time I see you, perhaps at the pre or post TBF meeting. The date is open for anyone, any time, correct?

I could just give you the channels but this is a good read:
San Francisco Vessel Traffic

Yes, Ch. 9 is the hailing channel if you want to stay off of Ch. 16. You can probably set your radio to scan so you won't miss anyone.

A couple notes: Ch. 13 is vessel "bridge-to-bridge" and is great for talking with a ship to let him know your intentions when necessary (or to find out his). It's not considered Outside Assistance under our SSI's. The section headed "Marine Events" is what Rick's PROs will need to follow on the race decks. Last thing: Some of the alternate channels for our use are only one watt and aren't good at any distance. Make sure when you ask another boat to switch channels that you aren't switching to one of the low-wattage ones.
