The Cruise Out Is Back

Philpott

Cal 2-27 Dura Mater
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, due to popular demand and gentle arm twisting by the Commodore, there will be a Cruise Out this year.
Destination: TBD but it will not require Daniel Wiley to pay an exhorbitant slip fee. No. No. No.
It will not be in Tomales Bay because the Commodore says that is too far away. I disagree but he is the Commodore.
There will be dorky prizes for esoteric reasons.
Hopefully there will be wind. Maybe there will be fog (remember that year? that was dense!). Stay tuned and tell all of your friends or invite people you meet at the grocery store.
Details to follow.

It's been mentioned maybe Sequoia (Redwood City) and maybe Petaluma. Where would you like to see us gather and share sea stories?
Never been to Petaluma. Redwood City is a couple miles from my boat. Tough choices Jim.......Petaluma for the thrill I suppose.

Petaluma. I cruised up there two years ago and loved it.

I'm not sure what Daniel considers exorbitant. When Surprise! docked there it was either $32, $34 or $35. Of course I put $33 in the envelope!

Due to the distance and the need to time the tides, a two-nighter would make the most sense. The shallowest part is the entrance to the Petaluma River from San Pablo Bay. But once in the river it's lovely, with some nice sailing. I was singlehanded but with an eye on the chartplotter I had no problems.

When we went to Sequoia last time Daniel had to get a slip in the Marina, cost him $75 while we all got the yacht club slips.

The destination isn't as important as the celebration, the camaraderie, the feasting, the story telling. A raft-up at Angel, Aquatic or Clipper could fill the bill.

Where do you want to go, Randy?
If not Petaluma or Tomales Bay, maybe China Camp?
Sam? Where do you want to go with Dragonsong?

I haven't posted in forever, but I'm watching this thread. Depending on where and when, I might be able to bring Alpha, but destinations too far from Alameda can be problematic. Alpha is an open cockpit....no cabin, no flotation. Knock her down really hard and she'll sink. So crossing the slot on an August afternoon is not in the cards. A raft-up on the leeward side of Angel Island, though, where I could sail over in the morning when it's lighter.... Or San Bruno. Anyway, I'll keep an eye on this.

I did the Vallejo Race on a Jeanneau 34 that a friend owns. I'm building him an asymmetrical spinnaker sprit. The boat is set up for cruising and the mainsail is sort of awful, but we had fun anyway. If you've never stopped in at Glen Cove, it's highly recommended. We went there instead of anchoring out in the river after sailing up to Vallejo and it was lovely. Their guest dock has room for 4-6 boats.

Yes, it has been very very quiet here.

No room in the ends for some bags or two part foam?
I thought about glassing in a bulkhead just forward of the mast, which would seal off a -lot- of air space. I'd have to put a couple of really big hatches in it, as that's where all the sails, anchor, bilge pump, etc go. I went so far as to make a template out of door skins but after sailing with the Scottish fleet, opted not to do it. I had to replace the bulkhead aft of the cockpit, but in order for me to have access to the aft deck, I had to enlarge the opening rather a lot. I'm a big guy! Flotation bags might still be an option, but other than that, nope.

I kinda offered to help with this.

I realize this forum is no longer the thriving hub of SSS information, but it's what we've got. So please talk with other SSS skippers you see - or just random people with sailboats - and let us know how far you (or they) are willing to travel to hang out with some truly exceptional people (and also some SSS folks).

Philpott asked again about China Camp. That's right across the Bay from RYC and I want to GO somewhere - but if enough of you want to anchor at China Camp, we'll do it. I told her the way this will probably work is we'll announce a few days ahead that we're going, and we'll see who shows up. That's the way it has mostly worked in the past. But if you want some say in when and where it happens, find that old dog-eared chewing gum wrapper with your forum password, log in here and let us know.

China Camp is kinda boring and also too close. Jim Q is the one who nixed Tomales Bay, said it is too far (says the guy who is sailing in the Hebrides).

I'm fine with Petaluma. I'm fine with almost anywhere as long as there will be truly exceptional people....

I also have the emails of people who have come to previous cruise outs, in case no one ever responds here ever ever again. Except Alan. Thanks, Alan.

If no one responds we're just gonna go where we want to go when we want to go. And that might actually be what happens. It is the way of the SSS.
