The Cruise Out Is Back

It's high tide (+6') at YBI at 1100 on Saturday the 18th, and again on Sunday at 1130. I don't know what's going on with the Clipper Cove construction, or whether those who'd want to get ashore would be able to. But otherwise I'd say that works.

Landlubbers could even come over on the TI ferry and one of us with a little boat could bring them out to the raft-up and if they behave themselves, take them back.

Has anyone checked this out? Off the Grid TI
encore! draws 5'10". I like 2.5' to 3' over zero (and rising) getting in and out while hugging the north shore half way in. Once you are half way in the depths open up, but near the south shore there be some dragons. Getting to shore is by tender or swimming to the beach; I would not think using what is left of the docks to be an option. There is now an ADA ramp down to the beach, but no telling what access to the top of the ramp is.

Even without the food trucks, there are restaurants, winerys, distillery, brewerys, a small shop for junk food & ice, a yacht club, TI Sailing center, a six acre park and museums all within walking distance.

I’ve got lots of housekeeping modifications to try and this would be perfect for that. Raft up, then break apart for the night?

I think I can make it!

Sounds like fun!

I hope to drive over there this Saturday to reconnoiter. I'll report back.

The weather is changing and the long-term forecast looks iffy for clear skies that weekend. That's not a deal-killer but it does remind me of an experience I had in Clipper Cove on a rainy Saturday about 20 years ago.

Teaching sailing to adults appeared glamorous (or something) and I had just obtained the necessary credentials. I applied at OCSC in Berkeley and began their structured process for qualifying to teach there. One step was to observe all their classes. This typically meant standing at the mast of a J/24 all day and watching what was taught.

The day I observed the Basic Cruising class was "anchoring day." We sailed a J/24 to Clipper Cove, taught the basic skills and then let the students practice. It was a full class with six of us jammed aboard the little J/24. It started to rain pretty hard and the instructor suggested we all get below until the squall passed. One student was a large man who was clearly uncomfortable. With all of us crammed below, he announced that he rather urgently needed to poop. I watched the instructor to see how he would handle this particular situation. Bottom line: He had no plan.

Fortunately both the rain and the man's urge passed and we returned to OCSC without "incident." But teaching sailing lost some of its glamor that day.

Wow. Just wow.

This works. I'll bring Achilles - I think it will be fine on the beach while we're noshing. The food, etc. is open from 1100-1600 and even with Fleet Week activities it wasn't very crowded.

The Snowbirds were good but a bit more subdued than the Blue Angels. Not surprising for Canadians: "Shall we turn, eh?" "Smoke on, eh?"

I would very much like to come, but can't. The way my life is now, if I don't know about an event three months ahead of time or more, I can't do it. Something will get scheduled on that weekend. This time, 10/18-10/19 are Joans 50th HS reunion. She just went to mine, two weeks ago, so I really can't back out on her. We bought the tickets for the stupidly expensive dinner thing at some ritzy winery, months ago.

The forecast looks better for this weekend (10/18-19) at Clipper Cove. I plan to arrive Saturday around high tide (1100) and depart Sunday mid-day. Saturday's on-shore food and activities are from 1100-1600 (bring a small boat to get ashore or beg a ride). It's less than a 10-minute walk from the beach. Most other areas are blocked off for construction - TI Sailing Center, the Winery, etc.

I plan to anchor Surprise! close to the beach on the west end of the cove. If you're not sure how to enter the cove without running aground, see Intermission's post above. You approach on the northeast corner passing close to the pier and barges, then head towards the shore by TISC, then out into the cove about half-way in towards the old marina. The west end is about 15' deep at MLLW.

Who is planning to come? Any requests or suggestions?

I sure wish I could come but I'm in the midwest for longer than expected. I miss my sailing friends and my boat. Here's a photo from the countryside outside Madison, Wisconsin

It's on for Clipper Cove. I just bought a bunch of munchies and drinks. Hopefully I'll see some truly exceptional people (and SSS'ers) tomorrow mid-day, or whenever you can stop by.
