Race Progress

Last I heard, Ben was getting ready to head back out. He either wants one of the Odom family t-shirts or he wanted to spot George enough time to keep it close.

He was having charging/battery problems (Mirage doesn't have an engine) - I'll let Lucie chime in with more details if she wants to.

Mirage back out

Giving TAZ!! a 25 hour head start...and no, don't want the tshirt! Wet boat and no power were the causes, all ok now.

What's up with Bandicoot?

Not sure if the rumb line strategy is going to pan out, latest positions vs. surface chart from Pt Reyes weatherfax

Keep an eye on tropical depression Blas and Hurricane Celia

On the bottom right of the weatherfax, TD Blas is dying out but headed straight for Hawaii. Hurricane Celia is right behind it, also headed for Hawaii at the moment, and still gaining power.

I'd agree - the current forecasts suggest Hecla is essentially already in the ridge as the ridge forms, and the folks to the north are going to have lighter air shortly. It's not clear to me that the fleet would be able to get far enough south to avoid the forecast's large area of light air that may show up.

South is good, if you can get there. The only boat that can really steam along is Hecla, and it's not obvious that even Jeff to could bail out far enough south to overcome the extra miles sailed.

So I expect everyone is going to pretty much slow down for a while, and the south boats are likely to do better in the near term than those 200 miles to the north.

Yep, hurricane season is here. So far nothing to get excited about for the fleet, and something to keep half an eyeball on in the weatherfax.

speeds dropping

Speeds are already dropping significantly for the folks up north. From 6 and 7s in the past few days to sub 5... That can't be a good sign of things to come. Even Hecla up front seems to be seeing a significant slow down. Will be curious to see if SW, Id and Cul can close the gap.

I'm also waiting with anticipation to see if Jeff goes up the mast to replace the masthead spinnaker block. With the lighter conditions it seems he will want that sail up.

The written logs from the racers are great! I so wish I was out there again, but working in an office all day has its merits...like being able to strategize how to get back to the starting line in 2012!

Thanks Bob and Rob for getting all this together. Looking forward to seeing you in Hanalei in a couple weeks :-)

I can hear from here in British Columbia the whining and sniveling from all the other race vets as well, reading the logs and wishing they were out there sharing in the thrills, spills and fun of it all.

As am I......

DTFs and differentials from leader

I've been tracking how each boat is progressing relative to the leader from roll call to roll call. Not sure if it is interesting to the rest of you:

I too have been following the race with great interest...... It is very inspiring to us that haven't done it!

Travieso, thank you for posting the progress report, it's very interesting.

Added 12 hr runs

Here is the latest progress table. Added 12hr runs so see any changes in conditions. Clearly some boats are slowing down. Dream, Hecla and WW, all seem to have found the light airs...
