Sss raid

Looks like fun to me.

I still want to do something like this and I know someone with a big blue boat is very interested. I've also heard from another, newer SSS participant who is interested.

Is the middle of winter a good time for this? Should we wait until Spring, say, sometime well after the 3BF and before the next SSS race, giving it a couple of weeks at least, for "recovery"?

Working on vessel options for the next RAID. This modified canoe (from the 1960's) does not have the speed of the kayak, but it offers to carry more gear and allow a change of clothing gear while underway.

I can even fish.

Back in 2019 (I think), Ants (kayak) and I (Laser) with support from Jackie and Skip made it from RYC to Napa over a weekend (Vallejo 1-2 weekend and sleeping on a friends boat Saturday night in Vallejo).

Anyone want to try this again next year? And/or cruise Tomales Bay over a weekend (thinking start at Inverness and spend Saturday night in a cheap hotel somewhere on the north end of the Bay). Eat a few (dozen ;-) ) oysters along the way...

Yes "cruising" your small boat can be good fun!

K1SMET and I would do this. I can't fully raise the keel so I can't beach the boat, and sleeping aboard is highly unlikely.

The Tomales Bay with cheap motel idea could work.

That sounds great to me. Marshall Beach is a popular place for camping and gala events.

Some other random comments - I think there will be excess capacity in some boats to help transport camping gear. Also, Kismet, could sway gently at anchor with plenty of shore boat services available.

The Sacramento TSCA has several events on Tomales Bay (New Years Day, and a couple summer events at Marshall Beach). For a small fee to join, the campong permits are taken care of by others, the more the merrier, and TSCA always like more members. They also host a number of events at other locations, including the Delta.

Thanks to Jim for reviving this thres.

Limantour Lodge is the cheapest I see, at $114. But it isn't in the North end of the bay.

Camping in the dunes at Lawson's might be the best deal in the North end?
$65.25 per campsite for 1 or 2 cars.
They launch boats off the beach with tractors; it's kind of fun.

Surprise! enjoyed her cruise to Tomales Bay so much that she might be persuaded to do another one and be a support boat for a SSS RAID.

Two or three skippers who can't sleep on their little boats could sleep aboard, there could be raft-ups, meals cooked, the head could be used, etc. It would depend on the chosen dates, my personal inclinations, the phase of the moon, etc.

David suggested I consider doing this for the SHTP but that would be somewhat more... extreme.

Here is a dumb idea I had when I traded my keelboat in for a Boston whaler and fleet of junior sailing dinghies, that I was reminded of by this and other recent threads.

Take that expired liferaft and tie it into your dinghy or load it in the whaler. Sail to Angel Island, grab a mooring buoy, toss the liferaft in and pull the ripcord: instant tent! Use a tall air mattress to keep you up out of any puddles. Get a nice SUP battery pump for the mattress, use it in suction mode the next morning to deflate the raft and to reinflate if it is a multi day trip.

Have any of you slept in a liferaft on purpose?

Your post suggests you’ve never been in a life raft. Correct?
